Painting galvanised railings ?

galve and manor coatings if u want the job to last forever and can afford it . wish i had got my trailer frame galvanised .i shotblasted it etch primed it and a few coats of enamel and it still goes rusty

If it were mine. I would T wash the railings anyway, but as its for a customer the manor coating stuff will last long enough.

The answer to this one for me is simple.

Don't.

Choose a high quality galvaniser and there is no need to prime or paint them after. I made my own gates and railings about 5 years ago and still look fantastic in galv. Galv will act as a self finish.

That's what I have used on all the gates and railings that I've built. The bloke comes over in his wagon, takes them away, and then brings them back when they're all done. If they're big ones, he'll even drop them off at the customer's property - easy peasy!

I REALLY dislike painting railings, so this works well for me!

i bought 3 farm gates 40 years ago that are galv no rust on them whatsoever i wouldnt be putting powdercoat on them at any cost

worked for a place a while ago, we did a few railings galved and powder coated,
awesome finish and the advantage of any chips in the powder coat in future wont lead to a bad rust spot like normal powder coat.....
plus ...nobody likes painting railings!

I have seen lots of black powder coat gates which look great when done.

Then a few years down the line they can turn a milky black colour.

Obviously something went wrong there but seen it on several sets of gates which put me off big time.

Hmmm yeah that would put me off too! The guys that I used to use guaranteed the finish for a fair while (forget exact how long now) so I figured it was worth a try. The last lot have been looking good for about 6 or 7 years now, but time will tell I suppose!

I used to have it done at the galvanisers and a local specialist,but when it got any small damage,very hard to repair,so always put customer off the idea,luckily my wife’s good on the painting and it’s a regular job she can easily fit in around the school run.

Use a decent aluminium or zinc rich epoxy.

Epoxy finishes will chalk due to UV exposure. Hence overcoating with a topcoat - acrylic or similar.
