    Hi all

More advice needed please. This time round I'm working on the bonnet. I have used a da and took it back to original primer and in some areas gone through to the metal where stone chips has rusted through.

So my question is shall I epoxy the bare metal area then use a barrier coat over the hole panel ? Then base and lacquer ?

On the wings I done earlier I took it back to bare metal so I epoxy the hole wing so was straight forward in prep etc.

Also I used epoxy 421from rustbusters but have now ran out . So advice on an alternative epoxy primer please .

Learning as I go so be kind.

    Best regards.

adhesion promoter on the bare metal, then barrier (if paranoid) 2k filler primer, flat back, colour and lacquer.

    no need to overthink it.

Lechler epoxy primer, do the whole panel, no need for barrier coat.

It's the old factory primer ? That's why I thought it would need a barrier coat after I epoxy bare metal areas ?

Think I will just take the lot back to bare metal and be done with it . Then I know exactly what I'm working with.

I also looked at buying Jotun 87 epoxy sound good ?

    lechler epoxy would be ideal

no factory paint rarley reacts , but sinse you have gone this far bare metaling it isnt bad idea

where did you get the idea of barrier coat ,imo its last ditch effort to cover bodged up prep over multiple bad jobs , shouldnt hardly ever be a instantce where its needed

If it was me I would just high build primer the lot, then flat it, and shoot your topcoat or base/clearcoat. Highly unlikely you will get a reaction as long as you have scrupulously cleaned it with panel wipe and let it flash off.

some of the spots in the middle could be feathered out a bit nicer if you want to be picky

In the second photo ? It where I gone through bare metal and where stone chips and rust where.

It not ready for paint yet it's just how I left it before I decide in taking the hole panel back to bare metal.

Famous last words, I did a bonnet on a 2 year old Corsa a good few years back now, base and clear all looked original, it had been damaged by the corners of a van door opening across is, flatted it primed it looking good put the base and lacquer on it it erupted all over, always expect the unexpected

very rare for factory paint to cause issues , its when theyve a few cheap n nasty repaints it gets messy

no harm in bare metaling it though if you have the time

Be careful of the "grey" lechler. If it's the natural colour it can be quite difficult to see when you are spraying it.
If it's tinted grey then it should be OK
