Paint bike plastics

I need to paint some new abs plastics for the bike. As its a nose cone and will be hit with flys it really needs a hard finish. I previously used cheap spray cans and couple years later looks like the moon.
The new abs panel is not great, the moulded holes and some other areas need to be strengthened I will probably use epoxy glue and glass fibre and take a bit of tine to prepare.

Is there any good alternative to 2k paint?
From some reading on here, looks like only clear/top coat contains the unsafe isocyanates?

Another fred mentioned that isocyantes are relatively safe to brush /roller paint. That would give a hard finish that can be polished smooth?

There was a recommendation on here for HB Body 989 epoxy Primer, saying that it can be sprayed with a nornal mask?
Or would a spray can primer be ok?

I do have a 1L tub of halfords mixed acrylic metalic blue which is correct for my bike. It is old but has not dried out, so I can use that for the colour coat.
I also have a 600ml bottle of acrylic clear so I could use that, but wont be hard coating.

I dont have an air fed mask or anywhere suitable to spray iso.
I will probably be using the spray gun included with my sgs compressor.

I also need to buy a suitable half mask, replacable filters for spraying or grinding dusts. May be difficult to get one now? I could use a recommendation what to get anyway.

I have a water trap for compressor but I should probably get one of the dessicant types.

Prep it then hand it over to a body shop.

Won't cost much more in the short and probably save you money in the long.

2k will always be king and it's just not generally practical to spray it at home.

I need to learn this skill. I will admit my bikes get used, they get scratched and could probably use a respray every year.

id also suggest handing it over to a bodyshop , bike parts are a nice earner for cash

typically epoxys dont have the iso's so spray that with a good mask , as for the top coat nothing much compares to 2k , you wont get a good job brushing it , so yeah air fed mask needed if going by the book

I can now borrow an air fed mask for this. I am considering 2k. I can build a temp spray booth end of the garden.

why not just buy a spare set of plastics and have a good set and a set that your painting , if its a common bike of course.

I have, two nose cones, 6 side panels and two tail sections. The old nose cone was cracked and needs repairs. I will get both done while bike is off the road. I may get a spare tank then I could change colour.

Give it a go if you have or can get a lend of the PPE.
2K is lovely to spray and bike plastics are a great place to start because they are not too big.
If you don't rub through to the plastic you won't need plastic primer.
I would just use epoxy primer and then the base coat and the 2K clear.

I would however try and get a decent gun, the one with your compressor will be pants and probably put you off painting.
I got a second hand Devilbiss SRI off ebay and it's brilliant for that sort of stuff, but you can buy a reasonable new gun for very little money, have a look on spraygunsdirect.co.uk

what about the dipping thing , or the wrap option , you have plenty of bits to play with ,, friend of mine did a harley with Linex it looked ,,,,, well ,,,,,,,, interesting ,
but he told ever one it was radar absorbent stealth coating ,, instant cool

Keep the compressor out of the spray booth!!!
Use a carbon filter on the mask line.

Will my acrylic mixed solvent paint be compatable with epoxy primer and 2k clear? I assume it needs a good amount of time to be fully dry before the 2k.
If not I will use up this paint on side panels where hard finish is not as important..

You can pretty much put anything over cured epoxy and it doesn't take long to cure.
I don’t like mixing base and clear from different manufactures but do a trial and you should be fine.

The info you need will be on the paint TDS, just stick to the drying times they give.

I see there are lots of chinese devilbiss clones but none are cheap No used ones on ebay. Slg-620 is cheap enough but listed as solvent paints only?

Bike panels are quite small so I think a mini gun might be best.

The ANI gf3 is a great gun for the money and will do your job.
If you get a couple of setups (1 and 1.2) you are ready for primers and top coat.
The fan is small compared to a full-size gun so you don’t need as much paint, which helps when starting out.

not list price but they do spray very nice and as a spot repair gun they don’t use much air. But would suggest that buying any second hand spraygun expect to buy at least the seal behind the nozzle

I think with a spray gun worth getting new so im getting the gf3.

Anyone able to recommend the paint? Preferably using the ebay discount

Am I correct that 2k only gives a few minutes after mixing to get it sprayed? If so 100cc will be too small, I may need the bigger 250mm pot for the gf3?

You will have a few hours pot life for the 2K lacquer.
The base coat is indefinite.

The base coat you have might still be OK, I’ve used base coat that’s over 5 years old with no issues, have you a data sheet for it?
Spraygunsdirect will post out paint (even to NI) so worth looking at and whuy I always give them a plug if I can.
For all the paint you will need it should not be expensive.
It's the other bits and pieces that soon mount up.

Just had a look and I have two water trap filter things one attach to the gun and other to compressor. Can I fill the water trap things with dessicant beads to make them work better?

No you can't fill them to make them work better, it would probably cause them to stop working, ideally you want the filter 18ft away from the compressor as they work via condensing, so the warm air from the compressor heats them up if too close and they stop working
