Oxy acetylene tip going red hot

you will love the way i set the regs just stick the torch turned on near my lughole turn on the acetylene bottle and turn up the regulator till you hear the gas.turn torch off then do the same with the oxygen then light the torch and set the flame its 99 percent correct flow as done it that many times. rarely look at the output gauges

I changed the tip to the larger one which came with the torch and it stopped doing it. ye my uncle definitely is a welder, makes loads of stuff for agriculture on his own. if you go there and want something and stutter or not sure what you want he will lose his temper lol. also smokes a pipe lo

I don't think there were many days when I wasn't using a torch. I've done similar to you. I also got quite good at turning on both valves of the torch, lighting it and often coming close to a neutral flame.

Possibly a problem with the finish of the other tip - if you've got a set of nozzle cleaners run them through it.

If your uncle smokes a pipe and loses his temper then he's likely got a few bitten through pipe stems in his collection.

get a blowback and the gas and oxy lit in the mixing chamber

Thats the exact way that VanGough used to do it too I think ,, before he moved over to painting .

It’s a 1/16 tip dunno if that make a difference. Originally bought the kit it was for propane but I bought a acetylene regulator, hose etc and now use that. Do torches often have flame checks things built into them or am I going to have to get some. The manual it came with says 1/16 and acetylene pressure so I assumed it would work. Cheers

Yes looks like a propane tip, I last used one on propane/ oxo mix

We all got a copy of that book when we did our BOC training course. You can drill a hole in the top corner of the book & hang it from your gas bottles with a loop of wire.

Murex document agrees:

Closing Down Procedure
Release the cutting Oxygen lever.
Close down the fuel gas (red) control valve and the flame will extinguish.
Close the Oxygen (blue) valve.
Close both cylinder valves. Open one and then the other of the blowpipe valves for long enough to vent all gas from the system. Ensure one gas is completely vented prior to venting the other.
Ensure all gauges register zero, then wind out anti-clockwise both regulator pressure adjusting knobs.
Close all valves down stream of the regulators

Only time I've had backpopping is with a damaged or blocked nozzle... but it's been a long time since I've even done much with acetylene, it's all been propane...

I'll be going to propane last week we used up our acetylene cant justify replacing it

Boc just hiked the price on acetylene again. Going to have to get a heating setup with propane in the workshop. Getting too bloody expensive acetylene at £58 a bottle

With modern plasmas and tig welders other than heating cant think of any reason to have acetylene for my work atleast

thats nothing they were charging low users with one bottle over 120 quid years ago thats why they lost stacks of bottles to theft . theres still loads about that have it and it lasts years . its the oxy you get through a few if your just heating and welding
