Overdue a Lathe Upgrade

Only comes up like that if you use the search lathe function, the normal listing has no header price, the seller said Tony has made a mistake.

That's practically been refurbed without a regrind.

I don't know I could pay that kind of money, they're nice little machines but not actually that solid compared to a CVA or a DSG tool room lathe.

I would mainly be making imperial threads - do they need a selection of change gears?

My metric M300 will cut approx 30 metric and approx 20 imperial threads without the need to swap out change wheels. I think you get a another 15 or so with change wheel swap.

It's surprising how small the actual lathe is compared to the huge cabinet. A small lathe with a big footprint.

I let a Hardinge HV get away from me for £600 and it was in good shape.

That should get you a tidy M300...a low usage secondary school original...if you can find one. Also just below that price point are the well used ones in potentially worn but usable condition.

Sub £2k your looking at knackered ones, don't forget even a knackered lathe will have saleable parts and due to the high price of 600 group spares means you're unlikely to find a dirt cheap knackered one.

If you're serious about a 300, make sure you get advice on here on what to look out for before viewing.

Don't be too sad about letting that HLV pass. They are a wonderful machine but despite being heavy they are not heavy duty. 10TPI is the coarsest thread on the screwcutting box for example.

If you're making steam models etc they are just about perfect.

Thanks @daedalusminos I am sure I will have plenty questions, I think I am being strongly swayed towards the M300, it certainly has a good capacity and an enthusiastic following. I am in no great hurry.

Those manuals have found their way onto the archive from VintageMachinery.org, so if you are to bookmark somewhere, the original home might be better as it has a lot, lot more.

You'll be want 3 and 4 jaw chucks, tailstock Chuck and live centre and a QC toolpost with toolholders

Have you decided on your budget?

Tailstock chuck, live centre and even QC toolpost are not specific to the machine so to me are not essential. For me, the essentials are things that only fit that machine (e.g. both steadies, headstock bush, faceplate, thread-language-translation gears)

You should caveat that, especially as he has stated his needs are mainly imperial, to say that the imperial threads have to be done with the half nuts closed and no use of a thread dial. If his threads are imperial, it is likely so are his parts, so the dial graduations (or dual dials) on the machine are also important.

I would just buy that one. A DRO and you are all set. Well within your budget and well below what I would even contemplate selling mine for.
Need a toolpost (my preference) and a good four jaw but there might be one with it. Steadies and bed stop are there which is a bonus.
