if the pto runs at engine speed via the main shaft that would be excellent i would much prefer to have the hydraulic pump at the back of the gearbox rather than poking out the front , now if i could find an auto box instead of the manual disco engine and box i have that would be perfectI believe the PTO on land rovers is done on the main shaft so is independent of the gears.
My friend runs a baler on the back of a defender and crawls along.
Also the big hydraulic pumps on tractor mounted hedge cutters run between 500 and 1000rpm so aren't going flat out
well there is about 25 acres that i cut 20 or so of that i use a 13' wide wessex mower behind a tractor which gives no problems, however there is just over 1 km of winding track through the woods which is about 8' wide and its this that i have trouble with there are trees right on the edge of it both sides and even when i fold the wings up on the wessex its still a little over 8' wide and even with me being care full with my tractor driving skills i always manage to hook a tree or 2 which results in 2 possibilities if the tree is less that 6" in diameter the mower just rips it out and if its bigger then my nostrils leave an imprint on the windscreen when the tractor stops dead ... either option dosent please me that much, so hence my desire for a ride on mower with a 6 or 7' foot cut ideally 4wd as it undulates quite a bit and as its at the bottom of the field it stays wet longerQuestion was asked previously by "gaz1" but I don't see an actual answer - (cos I'm thick ) - so ... what area of grass are you planning to cut??
From your posts and ideas the answer must be in units of "acres" - yes?
and the buggy track through the woods that i would like an easier time mowing
yes maybe ive spoken with 8ob hes coming back to me about the mower decksUnderstood - no benefit in pursuing "8ob's" post? Your project is going to be some mission to build from scratch.
agreed just looked at coolers on ebay pricey, i might make something oil to water rather than oil to airWith that much to cut If you go hydraulic drive you're going to need an oil cooler.
its a possibility but i still need something to tow it with, and there are no such things as problems mealy opportunity's to try something differentCould you use a towed, tractor mounted, PTO driven deck similar to this - we used to use one for cutting areas of rough at the golf course. If you need it wider than 1.5 metres, cut one side on the way in, turn and finish on the way back?

I'm interested to see how you solve your problems on this build.
And what's going to cool the water....???agreed just looked at coolers on ebay pricey, i might make something oil to water rather than oil to air
a separate radiator with an electric water pump off something like a vw golf so all it has to do is cool the oil 2 electric fans and away we goAnd what's going to cool the water....???
No - it's off the back of the LT230 (transfer box) input shaft.I believe the PTO on land rovers is done on the main shaft so is independent of the gears.
that makes sense, i think ive gone back to driving off the front crank pully having looked at the price of land rover pto's on ebay, front is a no cost optionNo - it's off the back of the LT230 (transfer box) input shaft.
It uses the gears but you normally run any significant load on the PTO in 4th gear because that's direct on the main shaft so you don't involve the layshaft at all.
