i use insulation tape on emI just eyeball centre height to a centre in the tailstock, then face off a bar, then lift the tool by half the height of the pip. Rinse repeat, super accurate with one or two iterations. I have a multifix qctp so once a tool is set, I just lock the height adjuster and leave it that way.
Andy, you'll need to shim each tool regardless if the shank matches or not, but shims are cheap, just keep the right shims attached to the tool with some elastic bands between uses if your going to be taking them in and out.
