Hello. Im looking for the best options in regards to buying my co2 and just wanted some opinions on this. Its outright ownership of a full cylinder with 5 years expiry on the safety test. I think when the test expires, the cyinder is traded in against a new one. Also it can be recharged any where. Im new to mig welding so all advice is appreciated.

You might want to shop around as I got my CO2 cylinder for about £40 with gas then about £20 for a refill. You don't own the cylinder but so what. There is no rental on it and getting through about 2 to 3 a year means I take in an empty and go away with a full one and this should have an in date collar on it. If you get through 1 a year then there should be no issue with date collar. Try googling "beer and wine cellar supplies" in your area. Most places will only deal with there own cylinders and don't usually refill other companies bottles. One exception I have read on forum is the people that refill fire extinguishers MAY refill it.

If going through that amount of gas renting a 20l 230 bar cylinder of Argoshield light (far superior to CO2) for £37 + VAT for a year and £25 per refill looks quite attractive.

they didnt do around the bradford area this time last year for me so had to choose another option

buying your bottle is not a problem getting refills for the bottle is as most wont touch what is not there bottle even if you own the bottle

if you are just using co2 gas and your close to them for deliveries then do so but i advise check at other co2 outlets as well

if welding i prefer the boc offer and its 32.00 for refill and yearly hire at 40.00+ im on my second bottle after getting started used more gas learning 14lpm to mig now ive picked it up enough 10lpm and it wont be long before im back for the third bottle

though i thought i wasnt going to do much welding i have done more than i thought i would be doing

Thanks for the replies. Im in sheffield so if i cant get a local refill i dont really want to be trecking to doncaster for a refill. Im not using disposable as i think thays just a blatent waste of money. I was trawling the net last night, found a boc about 3 miles from me but need to ring for pricing and they arent open till monday so ill give them a try next week. Also found anothee place about 2 miles from me in the opposite direction that do refills, but no info on cylinders, again got to give them a ring next week
Ive also read that some motor factors deal with co2, not sure how true this is.

When speaking to BOC you need the 'Volkzone' offer, giving the £37 + VAT annual rental and £25 + VAT fills. The ordinary price as you'll be quoted from most BOC outlets is much higher, and many local outlets don't even know this offer exists, so speak to the head office/sales.

That's the one in Tinsley/Brinsworth - right? I live on the opposite side of Rotherham and get my Volkszone (Argoshield Lite) gas from there. The same deal - for a few quid more - is also available on pure argon.
If you ring the 0800 number on the BOC website they will partly fill in the necessary forms for you and fax them on to the depot as they don't always keep them on hand at a lot of local depots. If you go at lunch time or when they're busy it could take up to half an hour to come away with a filled cylinder, but it's well worth the effort.

Yes thats the one, ill give them a ring. I got a price from a place called gas and hire, one off payment of £36 for the cylinder refundable when returned and £15 a pop for refills, thats just co2 though. Ill get a price on the argoshield lite and weigh up my options. Thanks again for the advice.

Some say that CO2 can be as good as Argoshield, but I prefer to do it right from the off - apart from buying a 2nd hand SIP MigMate as I was quite barassic at the time. Despite this 'slip' my welding is coming along nicely. I just haven't had as much time for practice in the past few weeks due to other commitments on my time. Fortunately I'm getting a lot closer to finishing my new 3 metre X 7.5 metre workshop so I can 'get back on the horse' again.
Next up it's having a go at TIG!

Ive only had my mig 3 days, using flux cored, but im well chuffed with it. Abit of a learning curve compared to the stick welder but im getting there. Beads look abit tall but im getting good consistant penatration and no slag entrapment which i had loads of problems with when learning to stick weld. Think ill leave tig for now, i watched some youtube vids last night, the process makes sence but the set up looked abit complicated!

If you're coming along that well with flux cored wire then you are definitely ready for shielding gas! Your welds should be even better due to the improved heat/filler penetration from the addition of CO2 or even the O2 in Argoshield.

So, i went and got my co2 on saturday. Long story short, he let me off with the deposit saying we usually charge a deposit on helium and gas for bbqs but if its going to be a regular thing ill just charge you for a refill, if any one asks you paid a deposit
So i got a 6.5kg cylinder for £14.40, just waiting for my regulator to arrive which was estimated for tuesday/wednesday. Sunday afternoon cutting the grass, my mrs walked onto the garden with a box in her hand, the courier had only delivered it on a sunday, apparently behind so hed got overtime. I set it all up qnr tested it, very happy with the results, didnt do too much though cos id already got sunburn from gardening, ill be having another play tonight. Kind of evens it out that i had to pay out £90 for a new heating element to repai our washing mashine last friday!
