What is that on the filter, it looks like soggy paper mache. Where do you think it came from?

Looking back to when I first changed the filter after what just happened I now recon it was papaer mache where the hydraulic oil wqas brakeing it down

I just replaced like for like when I first got the digger nearly all the ari spare list the paper ones I have a metal Baldwin one on order now.

I thought that's what you might have done.
The issue is because it's a pretty rare machine, I wouldn't trust aftermarket parts catalogues, as the filter has probably been cross-referenced a few times, with nobody actually checking it's actually for that specific machine.
Personally, I'd dig the wallet out and buy a genuine filter, unless you're friendly with a local Massey dealer who'll give you the part number and any cross-references.

Mann don't list any specific for a 50B, but I had a look at a few other random industrial machines of that era, and they all seem to use a HD55/1, and I wouldn't think Massey would have that many filter options then.

It was down to previous bad maintenance see my earlier posts from when I first changed it. I am slowly getting the oil clearer I have done it twice now everyone that has a 50B on the forums and fbook reckons it will never be perfectly clear

They have probably never cleaned it out properly then. Do a good job of it and you will have no problems unless you have ingress of water or coolant into a hydraulic system, which you say you haven't so you should have no problems. Good luck with the old girl. Fingers crossed the new part is a replaceable gauze element, they are not impossible to find. Various dozers have them and they look rather like a paper filter, you get someone who knows their way around a fram or mann book and you will probably get something by measurements.

Been doing some looking for the genuine Massey Ferguson 50B hydraulic filter element have now got the number 810404M91and found its a paper one. Even the Mann H4916 one is not metal I have on order the Baldwin PT88-HD at lest its on a metal casing and it is a full flow filter. There’s quite a few owners on the tinternet that have use the Fleetgaurd LF519 filter, that still looks like a paper one

I forgot to mention this filter element fits over a narrower filter screen with a very fine mesh.

Good point dobs, I can there are a few more fluid changes on the way, although difficult to see how I can get it totally out of the system with the rams an all.

The bolting set up looks different is that piece on the threaded part a removable bush like a thread protector. Apart from that they look the same. How much you want for them

I will also measure mine in the morning to make sure there the same or similar size

I found the other one that’s just a piece of rubber tube over the thread. These measure 155mm x 83mm 65mm thick. How does £10 the pair plus postage sound?

Hedgecutter that’s brilliant they are re quite a bit wider than the ones I have but I should be able to cut them down to fit inside the arms



Yesterday I did glue one up with some tiger seal, and I have to say I am impressed with the bond it has, looks alright with a drop of paint on it. I dont know what the lifespan of the hold is going to be but should l be ok until yours get sorted .

The metal cased filter arrived today so that's been fitted fingers crossed it will hold up better that the others, Its digging briliantly now, so the pump must be getting all it needs

Need a bit of advice from those that have used these diggers, when I fold the back-actor tight into the machine the bucket and some of the arm sticks out past the side of the machine I reckon a good 2 foot. On the lifting arm and on the slide frame there are holes (see Picture) or fixings on both side of the arm and frame.




Am I right in thinking when your driving the machine on the road or travelling there should be a bar that goes into these holes to hold the back actor in a certain position so as not to have the overhang. I have already took out one gate post where I forgot about the overhang.

Not to worry about the "travelling bar" I hit on one of the forums last night and someone had more or less asked the same question, and they had replies with the dimensions, beaut.

So today I found some suitable bar off the front suspension off an Iveco 59-12.


I chopped the bars off and used one of the lengths ,


I turned down the ends to fit the fixing holes, it turns beautifully, shame to use it on this,



but needs must. cut and bent the ends round to suit then welded



Works for me, job done



No more taking out gate posts lol.

Very lucky with the weather yesterday its rough today and bitterly cold, so I am having the day off. I feel a gaming day coming on. The kits worked well the last couple of days,



that new filter and pump has made one hell of a difference I have dug out an area roughly 40 by 25 feet down to approx 4 foot deep at the back end to 3 foot deep at the nearest, and all moved in the 1, 1/2ish+ton dumper lol.



By the end of yesterday I scrapped it all level down to chalk with a slight run off.

Little update on them rubber bump stop blocks I bought off hedgecutter. They were perfect all but being 30mm to wide so I needed to cut them down, with all that rubber I figured the bandsaw was gonna be no use so, after a quick clean up in the blasting cabinet I milled them, took 15mm off each side it was a bit smelly and a bit blue smokey but they milled ok




I was a bit worried I couldnt hold them tight enough so I only started with a light cut of 3mm next pass was 4mm confidence gained I finally settled on 5mm passes.


Once done they had a quick coat of paint



They got fitted this afternoon perfect, even the old nuts fitted
