I used to hate the old Hermaphrodite (Hermatite) red stuff, gets everywhere. You used to see it dripping from joints where people thought it cured everything. We always knew it as HermaphroditeI may just have an old tin of Hermatitem Will probably be rock solid by now, Loved the smell of it,
In the good old simple days they were convex, Then they got fancy and changed to the dished type, Not as good in my opinion. And they are made from thinner metal,
I used Hylomar Blue on the plugs on the Discovery. They are threaded on the TD5 though so I dont know if that makes a difference.
Haha.Yes.
You can't hammer them in.![]()

On pinto engines in FF2000 we used to drill and tap 3 holes 10-32 around the edge of the core plug, close enough that a washer would just overlap the edge of the installed core plug.
3x 10-32 cap heads, drilled and lock wired, stopped the core plugs walking out.
As the engine had the transaxle and Suspension hanging off the back it was a semi stressed member, and we did have core plugs walk out over time.
Once we went belt and braces with the lock wired bolts it never happened again.
