I am thinking of converting my 4x4 into a spring over axle from a spring under axle.

reason being is it is free lift and the spring hangers and shocks are always getting hit when off roading in it.

Questions

will this make articulation worse?

I know I need to make sure the new perches are welded on at a good angle and straight so that I maintain the same pinion angle and keep the toe/camber the same.

Anything else To watch for or would you not bother?

Lengthen shocks, brake hoses and possibly have to fit prop shaft spacers, it was a common cheap mod on Suzuki SJ's
This was my old one but this is just Bedford Rascal springs with longer shackles, Astra MK2 rear shocks on an angle iron bracket, absolutely appalling on the road, local Land Rover club invited me to an event never asked me again it was unstoppable off road, still miss it now.
One thing to consider is your insurance mine wasn't a problem as it was a second car on limited miles.

hey thats spring under well the front anyway, but if I go SOA the shocks would need to be shorter if I kept the same mounting brackets

This is an early Suzuki with a two stroke 540cc 3 cylinder i think, the owner is a mate of mine from the good old days, he had no money so just fitted slightly bigger tyres and spring over axel, it was one of the best off roaders I have seen

Look at the articulation.

Longer brake hoses yes but the shock mounts you could relocate higher up seeing as your fabbing new perches anyway

My XJ is SOA from the factory but I have a set of top plates with relocation mounts for the shocks to tuck them up out of the way

I already make shock relocation brackets for people lol but I would weld mine onto the new perches I have already made up. I already have longer brake lines anyway from when I fitted extended shackles

how high? My current disco 1 is in standard height and I’d forgotten how low it is compared to every other Landy Iv had.

I normally stick a +2” lift kit on as soon as Iv picked the car up. Decided to keep this one stock for the time being

my truck have a SOA conversion done,
and as long as you choose your shocks correctly and position them the ride is not massivly effected.
but then saying that i currently have no anti-roll bars, fox racking shocks and a full exocage and a few other bits too

OMG good old days, i still have these pics, they come back to haunt me, this one i fitted a 1.9TD XUD engine and LDV G box, i was lifted with the Rascal lift on SPOA, it had great flex so needed the longer brakes hoses etc and dampers, i used County one i think they were called, forgot now. Much same as Winchman set up.

On ething the extended shackles can flatten leafs and the Rascal lift give a harder ride, but gives the extra 1inch or so lift, depend son how tired the leafs are.

What a difference it made towards standard SJ

I had to see if i could find these vids, got all excited again lol

Hi, It's not just the pinion angle, The toe/camber angle won't be affected because it's a live axle but the caster angle can be. So try and keep the new perches parallel with the originals and that will keep both the pinion and caster angles the same.

@CompoSimmonite if your lift was by longer springs then the same applies it can adversely affect caster angle unless you have modified radius arms.

I love the standard height on a 110. I am 6ft tall and I can get my knee under the door sill. Not many standard offroaders you can say that about.
