I have a few old appliances that need repairing but its uneconomical for me as the replacement parts needed come to near the cost of new machines. It seems such a waste to take things to the tip that could be fixed but if its cost prohibitive what else can you do? I dont want to take them to the tip but are there any other options. Ebay as spares or repair?? But then I have to deal with ebay buyers! Some of the bits are decent brands (Neff/bosch)

Freecycle. Somebody'll have it. Got rid of loads of stuff that way, always felt better than taking it to the tip.

The splashback on the Myford is the side from a tumble dryer someone I know was about to skip.....
My local recycling centre is full of that kind of stuff, they have a sale on the last Thursday of the month for cycles and the last time I was there they had took Over £1200 (charity was mentioned) The lawn mowers are bought by a guy when they become a mountain, but you can also buy them for a very little donation. (collector box for mine was £1).

I think it really depends on if the replacement is actually a comparable quality - I have an old Kenwood Chef that was my Mums from the early 80s, I would repair that over a new one that is less likely to stand the same length of service.

I fixed my electric kettle yesterday; the base has a hidden safety cut-out, which got bent by a toast crumb.
I had to cut a slot in a screwdriver to undo the tamper proof screws, so I could tamper with it properly.
A tiny job, but still satisfying. It took an hour and I have gained a special screwdriver.

I have a Roberts radio-cassette with a broken aerial, an easy replacement you might say.
The deeply recessed screws to get the back off are like Phillips, but with 3 THREE slots. WHY?
Why does a radio need 3-slot tamper proof screws? I can't make one, got to buy a set.
Tamper proof hex bit sets are useless if the screw head is down a narrow hole.

As much as I hate the throw away society I have to agree with this.
Plus, so many house fires caused by faulty white goods I don’t mind getting a new one every 5/10 years whatever for peace of mind (?) that some slowly smouldering component isn’t about to kill my family (mate at a well known manufacturer said you would wince if you saw the numbers). House on my street was up in flames a few weeks ago - dishwasher. Wife’s uncle is an ex-firefighter and on his last night he was called to his own house, he was looking for the stripper but nope, house in flames: washing machine.
I’ve fixed plenty in times I couldn’t afford to replace them but they make it harder every time.
Non fixable why not most can be fixed or just junk it. save the planet and fix it. Now it becomes economics , but if you have time on your side give it a go. If it's unfixable nothing to lose. Step daughters reclining leather chair broke guy didn't turn up to have a go at it. She says I'll buy another one £800. Me FFS . couple of small welds and job done.
