Oil mixing?

I need 8.2 litres of 5w40 for my td5. For some reason I have a mix of odd bits of oil.

I have about
- 5 litres of 5w30 C3
- 5 litres of 5w40 C3
- 3 litres of 5w30 A5/B5

I am sure these all meet or exceed the basic specs for the car and temp wise the weights are fine. Can I put any mix of them in?

I can get more of the right stuff but wanted to use these odd quantities up if possible.

I ran my BM bike on 20/50 mineral oil, but when I got real low over in mainland Europe I had to pour a litre of synthetic 10/40 in as there was just nothing else available before I headed up and down the steep passes in Switzerland.

That was 50,000 miles ago, doesn’t seem to have done any harm.

I would use the first two. It will make 10l of 5w35 enough for an oil change and a weeks worth of topping up

I wouldn't mix 3 oils for an engine I care about. You probably will get away with it, but oils are really complex cocktails of chemicals with all kinds of additives thrown in to get various properties. There must be some chance that some of those additives won't like each other.

if they are the same oil then mixing the C3 pair is probably fine.

If they are different brands or variants then I'm with Ross365, the base stock might be compatible but the additive packs might fight eachother.

I don't mix oil at our workshop - I got OCD about this.

Right oil spec - same brand - same everything.

the 1st 2 no problem i wouldnt use oil that was thicker in my vehicle though /half of each isnt going to cause a problem

The c3 are both triple qx stuff from ECP and most of the manufacturer specs are the same on the front and I have used both weights in this engine, just not normally together.

But a service - you really should be on the mark with the right stuff.

When you charging punters "top dollar" for servicing - putting the cheapest oil "known to man" in there "pride and joy" - is "just not cricket"

Castrol/Quantum/Mobil/Mannol - is what we supply mostly.

Oil specs are "oil specs" - you just need to get the right one in the right engine.

I agree on the brand stuff. I only started using the triple qx stuff as I was doing changes every 6k as my vehicles were getting old and doing a lot of miles. The defender (200tdi) isn't far off of 300,000 miles and I was doing 25k a year in it pre covid. Their 15w40 mineral stuff seemed fine at my change intervals.

What do you mean about approved vs oe specs? Just curious. The one in front of me has a weight, ACEA grade, API grade and a list of meets manufacturer specs on it. What's missing?

I was looking at a 20 liter tub of 10w40 semi Mannoil today for the Surf.
I'll try some now you've recommended it.
Got to be way cheaper then the genuine Toyota oil I've been using from Roughtrax although they do a good deal.
Is there anywhere you recommend to buy it?

OE specs are not ACEA or API grades.

They are manufacturer specs - Fords look like OEM WSS-M2C950-A OEM WSS-M2C913-D (5/30w synthetic and 0/30w synthetic)

VAG stuff comes in OEM VW 500 series

Allot of the 208ltr "named make" drums of oil I been buying in of late - have come from main dealer parts offers - they always ring me when they got offers on - as I will buy 3/4 drums at a time if they are the right price.

WE used to have bulk tankers deliver oil when everything took 15/40w - then I moved to 1000ltr or 600ltr IBC - but there are so many grades and specs now - the largest quantity I will buy in is 45gallon drum (most are 199ltrs now thou - not 208ltrs). Like a Mars bar - everything gets smaller.

I remember when there was a surcharge on 45gallon drums and they took them back. Buying in oil in IBC's is a nuisance - as you end up with loads of empty IBC's to get rid of.

Quantum 20ltr cubes are OK - like a box of bagged wine - they easy to dispose of. Decent tap on these as well. 20ltr plastic cans are nuisance to get rid of as well in bulk. Oil drums will crush and go in with the scrap metal. 5ltr cans are just too expensive...
