Oil extraction suction thing...

Honestly this is my first foray into the Volvo servicing as I have always taken it to main dealers previously.
Interested to know which JLR supplier you use - I’ve used island 4x4, and a local specialist- but that’s mostly based on my old D2

I'd also be interested in any good places for the Volvo bits. Typically just use eBay at the moment

I bought a Volvo V40 service kit from FoS autoparts, near Stirling. No fuel filter in the kit, nor available on the website - they’d have to order one in specially for me.

Are yearly fuel filter changes not a thing on modern petrols? I’ve had nothing but diesels for 25 years, except for my first car, a MKII Ford Fiesta 1.1!

Bought in the Discovery bits from Island 4x4 - genuine LR Oil filter, but I decided on pattern parts for the air filter - seems OK.

Based on what I've found on second hand cars I'd say nobody changes fuel filters unless there's a problem!

On my v70 D5 when the filter blocked it started stalling...the drop in fuel pressure was interpreted by the ECU as a fuel leak so it shuts the engine off and flags up a fuel leak code! On that car the filter looked to be the original...so 15+ years old I reckon!

I can't think of the last time I seen a fuel filter on a petrol service.
The thing is on most petrols, they're quite a course filter, so only really get blocked if they've had dirty fuel put in. Some petrols don't even bother with fuel filters, and just rely on the strainer on the pump.

I'm overdue doing the oil changes on my XC70 and Discovery 3 (And a couple of lawn mowers TBH)
I no longer have a suitable drain pan (Disco is 7l IIRC)
Do I just buy another drain pan, and accept the lying on the floor getting the underbody trays off, wrestling with the sump plugs etc, or do I buy one of the cheap manual pump extractors ?
I know I wouldn't see any metal flakes in the bottom, but for convenience.....

Thoughts please?

It saves my old body having to snake under cars, which is true for two of my cars, but the third, a Volvo V70 2.4t petrol is a pain in the asp as the oil filter is hidden away underneath, so I still need to jack that one up, remove the cover, slide an oil pan under there and extract the filter, so I may as well undo the sump plug while I'm at it. If you take the new filter with out, you can just lie there and study rust for a few mins, then put it all back together and then slide out.

I didn't realise that one sets up a vacuum - so you only need to pump it to prime it? Are they all like that?

Yes, but...

The moment the tube gets air in it, the whole suction is lost (air being way less viscous than even hot oil, it just rushes in and the suction is lost)

Yes, you just stick the appropriate tube in the dip stick hole and pump it half a dozen times, and let it do its thing.
It comes with two or three extract pipes of different diameters. try them all out and use the one that goes in to the bottom of the oil pan.
I choose the ebay add randomly and it seems to talk about "12v cordless power tool". Ignore that, it isnt.
