Oil extraction suction thing...

I'm overdue doing the oil changes on my XC70 and Discovery 3 (And a couple of lawn mowers TBH)
I no longer have a suitable drain pan (Disco is 7l IIRC)
Do I just buy another drain pan, and accept the lying on the floor getting the underbody trays off, wrestling with the sump plugs etc, or do I buy one of the cheap manual pump extractors ?
I know I wouldn't see any metal flakes in the bottom, but for convenience.....

Thoughts please?

I've used one in the past. I think the main problem is that you don't extract all of the oil. There will be a little bit left in the sump.

I had a pella manual one.

If I replace it, which I probably will, I'll certainly get an air one.

The manual ones suck fluid, but, as soon as they suck any air at all, you need to pump them a load to get the vacuum back.

When you're poking about at the end of the job to get the last bit of oil, you end up loosing the suction a bunch of times and manually pumping them is just dull

I use a sealey manual vacuum pump type thing for oil changes on the cars. I find it great to use, not the quickest but certainly a lot tidier than draining into a bucket I did previously. Think it's around 7l so no bother for most, wasn't too spendy at around £60.

Only thing to check is if you don't have a dipstick, where are you going to drain oil from. My V70 I use the technicians dipstick hole, bit of a fight to get it out but it's easier than jacking it up and pulling under trays off etc.

Agree with the above, bought my manual one before I had a compressor.

I’ve used them on boat engines before, but you have to make sure the oil is good and hot or it’s almost impossible to suck out. Some dip stick pipes don’t point right to the bottom of the sump either, so a stiff auction pipe never reaches all the oil. Can’t remember what motor it was, but basically a car diesel engine in a yacht.

Some modern engines are actually designed to be drained using an oil extractor and you can remove more oil that way than via the drain plug.
They are certainly a useful piece of kit, but the really cheap ones don't always have seals that last the test of time.

I usually will still drop the oil via the plug, but most of the vehicles i work on are old and easily done this way. I've used the extractor method a couple of times but also very handy for doing hydraulic fluid changes and things like that.

I just use an old washing up bowl and tip the oil into one of those 19l water fountain bottles. It goes to the tip when I’m due a run, probably gets emptied once a year and it’s not normally full.

Honestly this is my first foray into the Volvo servicing as I have always taken it to main dealers previously.
Interested to know which JLR supplier you use - I’ve used island 4x4, and a local specialist- but that’s mostly based on my old D2

Yes, Island4x4.

Also have used JGS4x4, LRDirect, occasionally Paddock and Craddock. All pretty good.

One of the better ones is Advanced Factors - they have diagrams and good phone advice/aftersales service.

Ive used one in the past and like someone else said the oil has to be really hot, also watch the stiff bit of pipe that goes down the dip stick tube doesnt come off the flexi pipe on the pump down th'ole or you're in a world of pain!!

Annoyingly my car doesnt have a dipstick at all.. you have to drain the oil, fill with the correct amount then drive it until its hot enough to read via the dash computer.. by which time if there's not enough the damage has been done!! Good work BMW!!

My old Smart didn't have a sump plug so had to use a suction extractor. The sump rusted so decided to replace before it leaked and was pleasantly surprised to find there was less than an eggcup of oil left

I have a cheap manual one.
I have also used it for:
Brake Fluid
Power Steering
Gearbox
Differential
Coolant
Petrol

and emptying the dishwasher when the pump jammed!

It sits there from one year's end to the next then rescues me three times in a month. It's one of those tools that you didn't know you need until you have one.

When I win the lottery I'll get a commercial air driven one.

I would only use one of those suction pumps on a boat engine, personally I get the oil really hot and use the sump plug, the speed it comes out will in my mind anyway help to remove any particles which I’d worry the suction pump might not remove, I’ve got one though, thought it might come in useful one day, so far though it’s still sitting new in the box.

I already have a pneumatic brake fluid thing- but it is only 500ml. It’s great but slow. How slow are these things?

Difficult on the xc70 P2 to get it all out thro the dipstick tube as I recall.

Also the plastic filter housing is no fun either if someone has been swinging on it....requires the special socket ideally.

It's been absolutely spot on, had it about 2 years, it's done 4 services a year on the two vehicles we own.
Really handy, not as fast as pulling the sump plug but I tend to pump it up and leave it to do its thing while I change filters ect, just keep an eye on it and pump it some more when it slows down.
