Little and large:
40" leg vice holding a crappy little Chinese jewellery vice. The leg vice is the middle size of three we have but the biggest is in need of a soak in the barrel of diesel for a few months as it's been seized for as long as I can remember. The one in the photo used to be bolted via a bracket to the wall behind and used mainly to hold on to things while cutting and grinding - hence all the rust marks on the block work
. I'm in the process of shifting it into the new shed where it'll get a bit of TLC after being abused for so long.

We used to use leg vices in the gunsmith trade, dunno why. There was no big hammers about. Only tiny ones.
We reguarly cast fresh lead covers for the jaws, if your filing up small parts you just squash them in the lead. And we had cork covers for holding stocks.
Lots of hard boiled quails eggs, and pheasant stew in the factory oven for lunch.

Otherwise known as a blacksmith vice...my grandad gave his to my cousin...
Can remember you mentioning that. I bet your cousin is likely the type of person who'll never use it too?

That's something I'm planning on doing with one of mine, but making the inserts from lead rather than just covering them with lead. Any pointers on the best way to go about it?

You seriously wouldn't believe how much I've been resisting the temptation of starting a "Vices of..." thread.
We have one for workbenches and lathes, but not one for vices?normspanners

Can't tell you exactly as I did them a couple of years ago and whenever I had some spare time, so spread it out over 2-3 weeks, it also took much longer then it should have as they both were mostly made from scrap metal I had laying around, so had to sort through my scrap pile and then cut out each piece to size, then prep it and then weld it up. Also took a while to machine the thread and make a large nut for it. But if I remember correctly, it would have been less than a week each (actual build time) and total cost about $60 each.
