Odd shackle needed

I'm after a shackle to fit on a towing bar I'm making

The bar is 50mm round tube, so I need a shackle with a jaw opening of 50mm, but all the one I've seen with an opening as big as this have a pin with a diameter of about 35mm, which is far too big, and they cost a fortune!

The shackle also needs to be of the type with a safety pin (so I can put a lynch pin through) rather than the screw in type

Anyone got any ideas? I haven't had much luck locally or on the internet

I would try a local steel fabrication shop, crane hire place etc etc they might have some that have just been taken out of service



I got 4 in the back of the landy. Bought them from an autojumble local to me. The pins were ever so slightly worn so had been taken out of service for lifting. 12ton so are never going to see anywhere near that so are still fine for the odd tow. Cost me £2 each after a bit of haggling.

Most companys seem to require you phone them for a quote. At least the pin on this shackle is only 27mm and not 35mm. As you say though not cheap, £176 for this one. Hope this is of help?

Errmmmm.....am I missing something here? I'm finding them for under 20 quid!!

Take a look here.
Imperial sizes but 2 1/32" will fit over a 50mm tube.
No mention of pin size though but worth a phone call.

Woz its only money lol cheap if you hi jack the RAC or AA van lol shhh it wasnt me lol

The cheaper way is to put a bolt thru the pole and loop a small piece of chain to the bolt

About the same as the one you posted, £20-£25 ex vat and delivery, which is too much for what I need it for. Also means drilling a big hole

Just been out and checked, the tube is about 48.2mm wide and the wall is around 4mm, here's a photo next to the largest shackle I currently have, which has an opening of about 38mm, only cost a couple quid IIRC, but obivously isn't tested

I already have a trailer coupling to atach on one end, I just need a way of ataching the other to a front towing eye, that is idealy quick/easy and involves no tools

Why not just weld a 15 mm eye of plate or bar on each end of the bar and then use your shackles ? scoop out /grind off the tube to get a better fit ready for welding it on.

i saw something similar the other week. gypo actually, towing a tranny van with a sprinter. they just had a tow ball hitch one end and some roundbar in a u shape welded onto the scaff tube. looked like my 2yo welded it as well

Try B&Q, i got a few from there to connect to a tow cable. they had different sizes to and where cheap. But not rated.

what about getting a towing bar from machine mart and moding as needed not the spring one there rubbish

Machine Mart do one specifically to go over a tow ball which is 50mm. Is that any good? They are a few quid only. The jaw isn't 50mm I know, but I am not quite sure of your application. It's a bow shackle.

Will the tube wall hold up to a shackle pin pushing and pulling on it ?
It looks like if you you had some solid round to fit inside the tube, weld it in and plug weld it, then drill the solid bar. Or maybe bolt the round bar in.
The shackle you have looks like the opening is the same as the ID of the tube.
Maybe use solid the other end as well if you are going to be fitting a towing hitch.
