It's Ronseal varnish, Diamond hard satin finish.

I'd go with @MetalMonkey's suggestion. You're in for notable effort for a repair which may still not look right. Just lather the varnish on & call it good. Fill/varnish the dip with a bit of varnish before putting the full door coat on, & that may help some.

This'll remind you in future when to step away from a task instead of trying to achieve perfect & tipping it over the edge.

I've been a bit of a plonker and knackered a brand new oak veneer door
Here's a photo.


I slipped with the screwdriver putting on the handle and nicked the door slightly, it wasn't too bad and I only swore mildly...
BUT I then thought I'd sand it out and proceeded to sand straight through the very very thin veneer!
I've tried to take a picture of the veneer but it's almost impossible to even see it on the edge of an off cut.

It must be about 0.3 mm thick.

I've seen lots of products for repairing this sort of thing but wondered if anyone here has done it before and what was used.

I'll be varnishing after the repair so I don't think I can use the wax type products.

Thats a bummer, type of thing I might do.

I'm with others tho' either give a go with a removing and replacing the veneer or and I think would be my prefered option, as you fitted an agricultural style handle, fit a wide finger/kick plate.

I can't fit a different handle as it won't match the other 5 in the hallway and OCD says no.

I'll try to fill it and use some pencils to draw the grain, if that doesn't work I might try the veneer transplant but I haven't got any offcuts big enough.
I can't face doing a new door right now.

Embrace the mistake if possible, don't need to fit a new handle or door, new offcut veneer or metal plate.

I've repaired things like this a few times at work. Don't try and blend it in. Use a darker or even lighter filler to make it look like a knot or defect in the wood. If using light filler, you can use a fine artists paintbrush to paint a knot, lines, etc. some lines can be stanley knifed in and stained, et.c. Use your imagination. and no one will know.

Careful what filler or glue you use. They will not soak up the varnish like the natural wood and can leave an obvious mark when the varnish dries.

You could try sanding some veneer from the offcut, mix the sawdust with pva glue and use that as a filler.

But it would need to be very fine sandpaper and when sanding the filler down you could strike through again!

That was the last one in the hallway it's also in an original frame so cut to size and won't fit anywhere else.

if you go down the pencil route get an off cut sand it back and shade it in with the pencills colouring the grain back in then varnish. if it looks good do it on the door. if u cock it up nothing lost apart from time and cost of the colored pencils

Thanks guys but that bloody door was one of the worst to fit as the frame isn't straight in any way so I had to cut it top and bottom and plane the sides.
It's a last resort to replace it.

You could make similar damaged spots in one of the pieces you cut off the top and bottom (if they're big enough), and then experiment with a few repair methods to see how they turn out. No risk that way.
