Spax flooring screws with torx heads. As recommended when I was asking about nail guns.
I used torx screws on my joists. Love em. I was always suspicious of them but am a convert

You usually fix through the bottom bit of the groove.

Top of the tongue for secret nailing. Though the tongues these days are usually garbage, without a longer shoulder under the tongue to prevent splitting, unless you get your own boards made. In that case, maybe through the groove is a better idea. Here're some lovely early C20th details - the rebated, grooved and tongued joint shows what I mean. Our joiner's got a load of ash from felled dieback sufferers so he's making splayed rebated ones as it's a doddle to nail/screw on that angled tongue which also keeps the boards cramped up. You only need to do it every few boards depending on width of board, after cramping them up or (probably easier with chipboard beneath) laying them in a slight arch against a temporary bracing batten, then jumping on them to flatten them out and make sure they're tight.

You can't beat torx head screws. So much better than pozi's.

Ive just ordered a set of those pencils.
there a fair bit of filler going into my floor boards but the build looks promising.
I need to check my mitre saw against a set square

Something's definitely not square there !
Check your square is square before using it to square anything else - and bin it if it's out !

That was what I thought but everything Ive seen says go through the tongue at 45 degrees from above.
I was amazed by how small the screws are.
I will have a play tomorrow with some offcuts
