I used it when our NEFF induction hob went bang a couple of years back.

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Symptoms? Normally touch the appropriate 'button' then the up/down power level and the 'button' lights up with a number from 1-9 with or without a little dot to show 1/2 a power unit. Then orf we jolly well go.

The two 'rings' controlled by this board - the number continues flashing and the 'rings' don't power up. The rate of flashing is constant and the same as when the timer 'button' is selected and it is awaiting instructions, or the pan is removed.

No error code number. No display of the 'E' symbol. No change in flash frequency. If there is some error code it's too subtle for me to fathom out.

None at all - just having something to go from helps.

Spent the last 10 years working in high performance software defined radio so a complete change from that but I'd hazard they were probably a little more complicated...

The annoying thing is it will quite likely be exactly the same failure on both boards, could be a result if you find out what it is. There's probably a market for exchange boards but I guess you'd need a complete unit to test them.

There is such a market - me! The board is a 'standard' item for Bosch, Siemens, NEFF and probably more brands, so there should be a reasonable size market.

I had hoped some-one would have entered that market and offered exchange boards for tuppence three farthing plus P&P, but alas it seems not.

But when you think of what would be a reasonable sustainable labour rate if this was a full-time business with all its overheads plus P&P then a repaired board would be half the price of new. Doubtless if you were an 'authorised repairer' of the appliance the trade price of a new board would be half or less of the retail price on the OEM's website.

So only viable as a 'hobby' business where you are doing it for pin money on top of your pension.

How many people these days bother to even try to fix their own stuff - excluding us of course.

Weird thing is it's often well made stuff that suffers from an achillies heal that wasn't foreseen. In one of my early jobs I was a wireman at Fujitsu, we would get boards in for rework that always had exactly the same faults. On one of them it was just simply as case that the pcb tracks couldn't cope with long term current. We would cut the tracks and then run insulated solid wire directly to the connector/component joints and epoxy them to the board. We never saw those boards again.

After much faff I have had the board repaired and it's working for now.

I had two failed boards and the repairer was able to use parts from each to make one functioning one.

Can't recommend them unreservedly as their communications are poor, but it seems to have go the job done.

As it all took so long I bought a cheap replacement:

The repaired board arrived - unannounced - the same day as the new hob, but after I had signed for the new hob.

So I tested the hob then wrapped it back up. It hasn't been 'installed'. It is slightly larger than the original and fits in the hole whilst sitting on the worktop. It doesn't fit in the routed recess.

do you regret the granite work top ?

otherhalf mate had granite work top a day choped up some veg and fruit after dinner cleaned up the granite worktop looked like a chopping board that been used for 2 weeks

she phoned the supplyer saying theres a problem with the work top and could they send a bloke round to have a look he turned up looked and said youve been choping food on it her reply yes that why we had the granite for the preperation and just a wipe down as its a very hard and does not mark the bloke replyed no you still need to use the choping board as this is polished and will still mark with sharp objects then they had to pay for a new worktop at the cost of a £1000 for one piece

Only the price and the noise.

The noise level of crockery etc on it can be astonishing.

It's black with sparkly bits. It hides muck embarassingly well.

Chopping board always used - cutting directly onto granite would blunt the knives, so who would ever dream of doing something that daft??

SWMBO bakes a lot and loves it because it is 'cool' and she can roll pastry onto it directly apparently. I wouldn't know, my special skill is converting cake into calories.

Handy being able to take stuff straight out of the oven and put it onto the worktop too.
