If you put another bigger cog above the small cog you might be able to make a ratcheting lever like a arbour press. None of that walking around in circles and could be mounted nearer a wall thenGot me thinking. Just get some 10mm mild steel gears water, laser or plasma cut would be strong enough and pretty cheaper looks better than the ratchet type
Hi, Daf used a similar system in the rear axle on their cars, called it the Variomatic.

I drove a couple, but don't remember the fast in reverse bit. Many cars have a metal versian of the Variomatic, also designed by the Van Doran brothers, who were behind Daf.Couldn't they go as fast in reverse as they could going forwards?
