it's driven by... one of those things I can't remember the name of, variable thingie... belt driven between two plates so you can change how wide the belt runs over pulley is on end to change speeds

A continuously variable transmission, sometimes called a "Reeves drive", I think you get them on mopeds.

That sounds like a variator used in gearless scooters. It looks like that one is turned through 90° to drive a prop to the rear axle.
Most of the newer Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki Quads use Variator CVT. As do most of the UTVs on the market. The one on the video looks to be fixed to a small diesel engine, Aixam use a two cylinder Kubota diesel connected to a variator, but would Aixams have got to Russia?

If you put another bigger cog above the small cog you might be able to make a ratcheting lever like a arbour press. None of that walking around in circles and could be mounted nearer a wall then

I drove a couple, but don't remember the fast in reverse bit. Many cars have a metal versian of the Variomatic, also designed by the Van Doran brothers, who were behind Daf.
My Austin Champ would actually go faster backwards! Since I got it over ninety MPH going forward, I was not going to test that out...Did do about 35 though
Bought it for£45 back in 69 and towed a boat from St. Tropez to Poole, after sailing the boat from Sardinia. Interesting trip.For the bender, any final drive from a FWD car would do, around 4:1
