We’re here to help you prepare for changes to bin collections across the Borough.
From April 2026, to align with new national legislation, the Council will collect food waste and recycling every week and collect the other, residual waste on a fortnightly basis.
Each household will receive a new weighted bag for dry recycling and a new indoor and outdoor caddy for food waste, giving every household the opportunity to increase the amount of waste that can be collected and recycled on a weekly basis.
We are running a number of information events over the coming months across the Borough, including on evenings and weekends, so residents can find out more or talk to us about the upcoming changes.
This week our Resident Engagement Officers are at:

Billingham Forum, Tuesday 13 May between 1pm – 4.30pm

Yarm Library, Friday 16 May between 10am - 1pm

Love Your Markets, Stockton Town Centre, Saturday 17 May between 9am – 3pm

What goes in the different bags?


Where I am we have 3 bins, plastic boxes and a food caddy.

Brown bin for non recycling
Black bin for all recycling except cardboard
Green bin for garden waste but annoyingly they told me off for putting wood chips in it!
Plastic boxes for cardboard.

Our collectors are generally pretty good. Food caddy every week and alternate weeks for brown bins and then the rest.

My only issue is I live next to a side street they back down and because of the way they drive past us and back down the side street we seem to have the odd bin missed a couple of times a year. If you report it though via the Councils portal online they come round and recollect it a day or 2 later

not sure mate, when in goes in the truck they wont know. never leave any details to trace back here.
we do recycle. but as for food waste theres never is any. we pensioners can't afford to chuck grub out.

I live on a corner/T-junction - my main driveway comes from the side road, I have a side gate onto the main part.

I might have left a garden bin out front of both gates . . . only one with the "I've had to pay for a serice you used to offer for free" sticker on. Had both emptied.

I remember when Birmingham city council decided to start charging for garden waste collection, all it did was cause traffic jams around the local tip, lines of cars sitting with their engines idling, so much for the environment.

I always give our bin men a case beer & a big tin of biscuits every Christmas.
I put oily rags, paint tins , lathe swarf .
Always take it as well as any bags left on top .

exactly the same , xmas drink in and a thankyou goes a long way

Which is why, after a moment of "I'm not paying that!", I paid up. I have better things to do than sit in a long line of traffic for the tip, watching people carefully unloads one carrier bag of twigs

Someone on one of the stationary engine groups tried advertising the wheels as suitable for engine trolleys, cue lots of and no sales.

Just gave our bin a wash off yesterday as it was looking a bit grubby and noticed the tyres are starting to crack. Must be made of that new rubber like car tyres!

One for paper, one for metal & plastic (but not polythene), one for glass, one for kitchen waste (bagged), a sack for cardboard (that must be kept dry, or they won't take it), one for household waste (emptied every 4 weeks), one for garden waste (paid for), and a small caddy for batteries!

It's the contents that need to be dry. They give you a woven polyprop sack that they claim is weather proof, so in theory, there's no problem leaving it outside. If it's at all crumpled, though, the water pools on it and runs inside

its alot lower than the council claims thats for sure

alot of it is incinerated for the electric plants and there excused from co2 emmisions

my own area is below 28 percent yet they claim much higher

the bags amuse me - when full they stay reaosnably were left . .. they kept emptied and thrown back vaguely in the direction of the house they came from . . . which means by the time people get home that evening, they could be anywhere

I had a suit from the council come round once. He had a minion with him so he didn't get his hands dirty. I had 'Put the wrong stuff in the recycling bin'. we are allowed Metal and Plastic in the bin. The offence? an electrical back box (metal) and a couple of placemats (plastic). The guy got asked if he knew what a tin can was made of (metal) and did he know what grade of plastic the placemats were. I told him I knew which grades of plastics were which, due to my job. (i don't have that type of job, but he didn't know that) and the placemats were the same as a margarine container. He, and his minion, then decided they had to be somewhere else.

When our garden waste green bin split I repaired it with the glue gun then drilled either side of the repair and stitched it with tie wraps. It's lasted a few years now.

We’ve got two WB’s for general waste and two for recycling. Never had a bin refused collection yet and some yeuch has been put in them. Don’t hear of any bins being nicked either.
