our black general landfill bin had the lid ripped off last year, bodged it back with cableties, recently the sides split and it was dead,
asked the binmen about a new one, he said its £40 contact the office,
his mate picked it up and threw it in the truck, saying ring the office you will get a free one now,

I owe them a few beers

they did that local but got found out and sacked if i fill the bin with krap i put the heaviest bag in the bottom over the wheels and the light stuff on top and face the wjheelybin next to the road so they dont have to hardly move it to go on wagon and it goes every time

Got my number on mine...still have people trying to claim it as theirs! If I have a bit stolen then I'd probably stick a tracker on it .

I diligently put all my recycling in the blue bin...once it's full I diligently put it into the black general bin!

I'm very happy to recycle...if the bin isn't collected that's not really within my remit!

working at some flats for a week so dumped 6 bags of crap out of my garage in to the wheely bins on dustbin day one in each bin brilliant . went today to deposit a couple more but wasnt any there asked the maintenance lad and he said all 6 had been nicked a couple of days ago had mine nicked last year by a bloke near by so went and dumped all the crap out of it on his drive and got it back

I do the complete opposite – heavy stuff high up, certainly above the middle.

I’ve had three bins split down one side on the corner, on the front (assuming the wheels are at the rear), so I took a look.

Watch how they get loaded – lifting beam hooks under the front edge, lifts, the bin swings in to contact the lower support which bears against the front face of the bin about 1/3 to ½ way up. Meaning the weight in the bottom gets cantilevered around that support, flexing the bin.

Enough flexing, or simply a cold day, then the bin splits. And for the general waste bin replacement, I got charged.

Then the two year old garden waste bin split . . I got charged. Roll on two years, it’s replacement split. Not a lot I can do about weight distribution in the garden bin. However, I noticed when paying for the garden waste service every years, I noticed there was a tick box for a bin . . . so I ticked it. I have few bins in reserve now . . .

I would glue one of those tracking discs into it somewhere

For £10 a piece i have a row of brown bins used as cheap, dry, easily moved storage at the side of the house for various things, kindling , garden stuff etc.

I buy compost bins through the council….screwed to a pallet they make good hay feeders.

Reading all your bin sagas, I dont feel so bad now for getting Tracy the bin lady out from the council about our issues.
Our bins are collected from the end of our drive a mile away. But just past our drive end are 3 holiday cottages, their guests seem to find our bins easier to use than their own. And I refuse to sort others waste, its bad enough with our own holiday cottages and only green or black bin options. The big family size bins stay at the collection point and we have medium sized ones here I take along with the quad and trailer as required, usually empty them into the big one unless the neighbours have filled our big ones.

If there were more Id probably top myself. As for garden waste, feeds bags, etc isnt that what bonfires are for.

Found the same. Enough plastic in the original bin when it did split around the lifting lip, I could pop-rivet on a repair/strengthening plate
And they keep changing to the cheapest supplier I guess - my stock of brown bins are all from different suppliers, different designs, all following the Colin Chapman principle of lightness to the point of imminent failure is best . . .

Unfortunately a refuse operator got tangled up in a bungee cord hereabouts last week while emptying wheelie bins. No update on the condition of the operator but the council are warning of long delays as they have resorted to manual emptying whatever that means.
Beware more h and s rules or completely cancelling the service all together.
Have seen videos of robotic arms picking wheelie bins off the street and emptying in the box behind in Australia. Would hazard a guess that will come to a street near you shortly.

An interesting thread, in this part of the country we have a separate council charge for bin emptying, bins have a chip in them so they know who’s it is, first six empties are included in the standing charge (about €150 a year from memory) then it’s €2.50 a time; they come every two weeks. No garden waste collection - the village has it’s own green waste dump, and all recycling has to be taken to the communal bins in the centre of the village.

Some parts of France have moved to no collections at all - you have to take your rubbish to a central collection point which is causing uproar, it’s nigh on impossible for the elderly and those without a car.

The good thing is the local tip will take anything other than household black bag waste and asbestos.

We have almost the same done by a local collective (non profit), but no charge yet as we're in the trial year. There's two bins that are coded to your house and its identity and weight are read by sensors on the loading mechanism on the lorry.
They specify handles out to the roadside making emptying them a really quick and efficient process.
The black bin is kitchen waste and horrible stuff that cant be recycled that you get billed for automatically with x free collections a year collected on a fortnightly basis. The second (yellow) bin is for recycling and thats free to empty and emptied on alternate fortnight. No "thats MY bin" wars because the tracker etc is widely documented & its embedded into the body of the bin itself during manufacturer. And stealing someone elses is fraud and leaves a audit trail.
The only real way to game the system would be to fill someone elses black wheelie bin with your rubbish and have them billed for the extra weight, but everyone just puts them out the night before late. I've had air bnb's renting the nearest other house put stuff in ours a few times at first because the person with the airbnb has opted not to have a bin, but I lashed the bags on the airbnb house steps to remind them this was a bad idea and its stopped happening.

Locally some less accessible villages (ie roads too small for the bin lorry to fit down) have a collective bin point with huge bins on wheels that take maybe 20 wheelie bins and they have to pay a % of the charges regardless of who filled it. I can imagine that leads to friction occasionally...

I think you can get a replacement bin a year free and they were encouraging people to buy compost bins at what it costs them to buy them which is 20e for a extra large one as the more you compost the less you put in the black bin.

Local tip takes green waste, and anything except asbestos and cut up tyres, whole ones are fine but limited to 2 per visit but none with the sidewalls removed that were used as planters but nothing the bandsaw cutting them into chunks and feeding into the black bin cant fix... If I drive to the tip in the next big metro area that I'm allowed to use, I can dump asbestos there!

In Southern Ireland they get charged by the weight in their bins. So they used to come across the border and dispose of their waste in the recycling centres of the border towns in Northern Ireland.
Then they stopped anyone with a ROI reg on their car from using a NI recycling centre.
So instead they come when it is closed and fly tip their rubbish outside the gates!
I was there one Monday morning and the mess was terrible. They had brought 3 extra men and a bobcat to help clear it up!
