Not been asked overtime again

One place I worked at , there was a lad who did overtime every evening and Saturday .
This seemed to make him flavour of the month , until when the boss asked why I didn’t do as much o/t as him, and I told him I did more work in my 40 basic hours than he did in his 55 +

In my last job there was someone who moaned constantly about having to work 60-70 hours in a week, no overtime.

My response was that he is either terrible at his job or his workload (less projects than me, both in number and value) was too high.

Never found out if anything changed as I left, I'm busy throughout my work day but never feel the need to keep going

That's why some places need a "union bod"

Even union bod I've come across has been stuck in the mindset of a trouble making, rabble rousing, argue for the sake of arguing, do as little work as possible, blame management for everything pillock.

The reactions of some of the pillocks to management's attempts to keep everyone safe and working as the pandemic started up, when no-one knew what was happening was ridiculous.

Hopefully younger generations coming through can see through that sort of crap.

As for my contract - they pay me a load of money to do what I do - so I, and colleagues of a similar mindset and ability, are perfectly happy to do what is necessary to do it, and in fact mostly really enjoy doing what is necessary - what I lose on a couple of turns of the roundabout this week, I more than make up on the see-saw/swingy horsey thingie next week

Sadly that's not the experience of the majority of people I speak to about work.
In fact it just keeps getting worse and worse.
Summed up by Health and Safety first coming in and management hated it. Then for some strange reason they suddenly saw it (some of it) as a way to get what they wanted. So it turned full circle.

Suffice to say its very very rare for any improvements to conditions of service, improved holidays, improved working hours. But it's constant chipping away at all of those things.
It's always been take take take by management.

The guys I used to work with in the machine shop that I started my working life at would do overtime 'every hour god sends'. Literally, they'd stay over an hour every evening, work Saturday all day, and Sunday's occasionally, and a few would work the summer holidays too. I don't know if they just needed the cash desperately, or simply had nothing to go home to.

After 11 years there the place went bankrupt, closed down, we all got laid off, and two weeks later it reopened and the boss invited everybody back. And they all went. Except me, I'd already got another job that paid a quid an hour more.

I only received £800 redundancy pay after 11 years, because I'd been an apprentice for half of that.

It was originally called Stafford Fabrications, and reopened as Fabrications Stafford.

not really helpful but the thread reminds me... used to do agency work on weekends when 16/17 still in school picking orders for Wincanton, the pay was higher on sat/sun so was pretty decent for what it was...the gaffer eventually asked me to do a Monday shift that wasn't possible since I had school to go to! think that was the last shift I got there!

a saying of one of my bosses was: "the graveyards are full of indispensable people"

maybe a simple: 'would you like me to stay-on this week?' to your boss might get you back in the gang.

A customer of mine worked in the rag trade for over 30 years. Same premises, same management but every couple of years the company name would change.
When he retired, he asked about his state pension 'sorry old chap, you haven't paid any National Insurance for 30 years'.
He had paid his NI, it was shown on his pay slip, they just never passed it on.
Luckily he was the sort that kept pay slips. He was able to show NI was being deducted. He ended up with 95% of his pension.

Time to check your NI contributions are up to date.

A mate of mine was like that. Always did anything and could not understand why people were upset. Until he lost out with his pension by 18k....them he realised.

Only time I push on is when I need to be ready for another trade the next day or booked in elsewhere the next day and need to be done

I think age is a factor, when you are young and in need you do the hours to achieve the needs. As you get old, tired and a tad weary there is a tendency to not give a flying cluck.

I only worked in the U.K. for 14 years, having left when I was 29 to go see the world, and never actually had a job here since then. I'm 62 now. I think I shall be entitled to £65 a week, aged 66, according to to the web page one can check such things up on.

An old boss once called my personal phone on a Saturday, I knew it must be serious but I wasn't letting him off lightly but that was the only Saturday I worked

Overtime is great if it's a bonus, if it's to make up an inadequate wage then I don't agree with it

I had a dealer ring me on a Saturday wanting some info that he already had . I was on the roof tiling and nearly had a nasty rushing to get the phone. I said I would find out the details he wanted but it would be after he closed the shop so could I have his home No. We went to a party that night so I gave him a ring at about 2.30 am . He never rang again.

Basically they employ staff to make money for the firm and don't see themselves as a Charity.

I must be the excepton here I have always been a bit of a workaholic. Comes from growing up penniless I guess you want something you get out and earn it. My company told me in my interview that they reward hard work and they really meant it so I'll be 25 years with them this year. I've been on many varied and interesting jobs all hard work but it's kept a roof over our heads and no money worries so I ain't complaining.
