It's not uncommon at all. I've been in workshops that ran at a snail's pace and got bitched at for working too fast. In my current job i've been bitched at by colleagues for doing recovery/tow jobs too fast.

I only have one speed.

I can see it from both sides. I always have/take pride in my work, but some places/management grind you down. Quality of work never need drop, but why wear yourself out for ungrateful b******s who go out of their way to be so regardless of what you give.

As for me - contract says something along the lines of all duties and hours required to complete the task - so no overtime.

I refused to sign that in my current role. I have been burned before so it was crossed out and the actual hours put in.

I've been job hunting. quite a lot of places expect overtime to be the norm. I was disciplined once at my old place, because I didn't want to work weekends. I've got a life. I don't live to work. I work to live. Managers sometimes have to remember that. You can work all the hours that you want to, and still drop down dead tomorrow.

Workplace politics, favouritism and all that stuff does my head in.- it reminds me why I decided to go self employed 40 years ago.

Sounds more like a communication problem to me, employers only need to know who will show up. Quite often the lads will do a Saturday or Sunday on the understanding they can have a week day off,not an issue if its all planned, its the no shows that cause the problems.

Overtime is great if it's a bonus, if it's to make up an inadequate wage then I don't agree with it

I have always paid a Sat at normal rates but they Finnish by about 1.30 which is cool with me as that's always been the norm in construction anyway.

We've got 1.75x Time for all overtime so good when its a late finish or Saturday but not as good when your working sunday and would typically be 2x Time

A previous place used to require you to do some overtime in the week before asking you to come in on a weekend.

Another place, work used to take place really slow, so you were sure to be asked to come in to work overtime in an attempt to meet deadlines . . . newbies starting and working at normal rate, ie double the speed of anyone else, would be taken to one side by the shop steward and had words with . . . I'm still not keen on union bods . . . especially those stuck in the 70's mind set.

was described as i was taking the job as you do a couple days you might get back 3 hour late not paid for just just paid your 8 hours for the day
but the other 3 days 1 day your 8 hours the other 2 days a short days

as work comes in

that was ok for the first 3 months but after that time we had split the first team (was 2 people) in to 2 so now 4 people working the guys that worked with me changed around so they had some short days
but it was all ways me that had the days work half way up the country or way down south as i never got to deal with how the jobs got handed out the person above me and before the boss sorted that and gave himself all the easy jobs/local type ones the **** long days stuff got thrown my way

let say i put up with that for another 6 months but then left as got offered another job

i was young did not know how things went in work thought this is normal **** runs down hill
