Norton db6 deep throat fly press.

In my local steel stockists and machine shop this morning. And noticed in the corner was a Norton db6 fly press. Am watching a couple on the Internet. And so can't wait until I get one. A deep throat one. These things are massive. I couldn't believe the size of this one. Are they all the same size or are there various sizes.

They range from baby jewellers toy sized to knock your head off your shoulders in a blink monsters.

When I was doing sheet metal work as a trade we had four various sized models and the largest was a brute of a thing, great machines if you have a good range of formers and dies.

The smallest I have seen was a stunning stainless and brass one about 12" high, an exact replica of a Norton, the guy was using it to put a wave effect in a silver bracelet, the balls I suspect were just for show, all the force was simply from him winding it down, it may have even been an apprentice piece and not a bought item.

This one they had his norton db6 on it. It was at a guess over a meter tall. 600 700 mm depth. I would say a good 500 kgs.

Have found a place that stocks them. Got my dye on a norton bd6 deep throat. . They do bigger ones to. Didn't realise they went bigger. Nice xmas present for me.

I wish, I used to like that old borer. The pic was taken at a company I used to work for, they went bust and I bought some of the kit when it all got auctioned off, but little space and financial uncertainty due to being made redundant limited my choices. There was a Huron mill I used to run but I had to leave it due to space and funds.

I'll get some pics of our flypresses up some time... my old man took over a complete minters workshop from 1881 in the early 90's. we have lots of them, still in regular use for blanking and clipping operations.

He worked as a minter in residence at the jewellery quarter museum in the mid 90's restoring all the drop stamps before they opened.

Unless you really need a massive flypress for a particular application bigger is not always better, my no. 5 does everything I've ever wanted from a press it has the power I need yet can be handled with precision, is easy to change the handle position on and doesn't take up too much room,
You wouldn't want to be using that beast in post 5 to make too many of these type of thing
