It would be like adding another 20 million homes.
And you think the grid would cope
Electric cars seem cheap as you don't pay fuel duty on them. It won't be long!
At the moment it is like running on red diesel.
All the other motorists are subsidising it.

When do you think the cars are charging?? At 5 PM during dinner time? You set them to charge over night at off-peak.

I remember the mobile phones of 30 years ago, as big as a house brick..heavy.... 8 hour battery life, ages to charge..just made phone calls... whereas modern phones, 6mm thick, weigh nothing, some have induction charging, (charge for free in MacDonalds) and mine will stay charged for a week if I leave wifi turned off.
And it takes pics, videos, navigation etc etc.

If leccy cars progress that fast....

Or any time, when parked over induction charging points built into all car parks, drive ways etc..... which will be the way of the future. Soon induction charging will be as common as WiFi.

Induction charging can't handle much power. It isn't new - was in use in the 1800s!
Tesla was a big fan of it.

Ah, but progress will be made, because it needs to be made. When you calculate how long a car is parked for overnight, or in general, and the vast majority of cars only do a couple dozen miles a day.

Which was carefully ignored when the big ‘catalytic converter’ scam was pushed through years ago.

All the 'early adopters' will have been people who could a) afford the high initial price of an EV and b) either had the option of charging their vehicles at work or who could easily charge their EVs at home.

This is not typical of 90% of the population (my estimate). Basically EVs have been purchased by the well-off for whom cost and charging issues are not a concern, not the hoi-polloi...

Folk keep taking about the grid, but most don’t realise we pull 24% less elecy from the grid today than we did in 2005. In 2018 we used the lowest amount since 1994. The grid infrastructure is more than capable of taking any EV spike in the next decade.

Taking delivery of my new EV on 6th of March. Don’t know how I will manage with all of the issues pointed out by the diesel nuts on this thread.

The issue with the grid is not out right capacity its, the uncertainty of when it will be pulled. This is part of the reasons for spd's in new installs

The short term fix for climate change has to be synthetic liquid fuel that can be used with existing cars.

To me it seems blindingly obvious.

I simply cannot see hundreds of millions of electric cars being built in time...we need practical solutions!

Personally I think that in the long term, we're goosed. I simply can't see a) people being prepared to give up personal mobility and all the hydrocarbon-derived goodies we enjoy and b) world population decreasing to sustainable levels. Other than by a mass extinction event, of course.

I would be very much in favour of electric cars if the power came from nuclear.
Even better mini fusion reactors and we could have steam trains back!

I’ve done my bit, only had one child.

I have wondered this too - it is not all about the lowering birth rate - we are healthier and live longer - less of us die young - everybody has more money and wants everything (houses and cars). Plus immigration adds to the numbers - emigration is still lower than immigration.

Even thou - I do feel it is the main issue - population growth - I had three kids and have seven grandchildren - we have high incomes and are high consumers of everything. I am the enemy - I do really feel this - had I realised this earlier - I may have gone for one child? Don't know - I like family life...

Hello Screwdriver,

solar is a very poor way of generating energy for the grid. It's output against capacity is small !0% or so, its maximum output coincides with a time of least demand. It's zero output coincides with the time of greatest demand. Not only that, technically it is asynchronous and has no inertia, both factors required to assist grid frequency. That and wind produce an inferior type of electricity compared to conventional generators. But you won't see that published anywhere in the media.

But it doesn't and they won't be. They are fed from fossil fuel generated electricity, not wind, solar or nuclear for the simple facts that converting to EVs increases grid load and nuclear, wind and solar are always running at maximum available output so cannot give anymore for the EVs. This is how the grid works, the baseload generators run at maximum and the difference between demand and supply is met by dispatchable generators that can modulate output, pretty much gas these days as there is little coal capacity l;eft.

It takes 5 minutes to fill a car with petrol and pay. How long to charge an electric car? A typical petrol station has say 24 pumps. You would need 300 charges for each petrol station

You mean today they would need that, if no one could charge their vehicle at home

Your stuck in the past, only those that don’t have the easy ability to charge at home, or are doing longer trips need to charge from a separate location,

I bet most people who currently have a EV rarely charge it from anywhere other than home.

I want to see what happens when we get one of those frequent motorway closures, with electric cars sat for hours, in winter, electric heaters on.....lights on.....then the road is cleared..... and we have 300 flat batteries....

Cars are charged overnight, when demand from industry and businesses drops off, because most people are asleep.

I visit a petrol station every fortnight, if I had a EV it would be charged on a external charger once every 6 weeks.
