No proper cable access point on outdoor lamp.

I bought a couple of these outdoor spot lamps from Amazon (The make is ELRO. Type BYRON PL01).They seem to be a nice compact weather proof lamp, and are IP44 rated.

I’ve had a look inside the swivel base where the standard block connecter is, but there is no “proper” access point for the incoming electric cable. When I say “proper” I mean there are no recesses or cut-outs anywhere. I could always drill a hole or cut a bit of the plastic away on the side, but is this normal for things like this? There is no purpose made “week point” to knock through, like there is with socket back boxes etc. Even doing this, I think I would struggle to put armour cable to it (if it is mounted away from the house) , as the depth of the base is only 14mm. At least with flat TW&E I would be able to get some of the outer sheaf inside the base Any thoughts on the access issue on these lamps?

Hello Mart,

I can't tell the size of the base but could it be designed to fit to a standard conduit box, if not then just fix to a square adaptable box.

as above if your feeding with armoured mount on a 20mm conduit end box and drill a hole in the back for cable entry. if its fed with flex just drill a hole big enough for the flex underneath and fix direct to the wall and seal with a bit of silicone . becarefull when drilling they can shatter quite easily when the drill goes through

As Piman says, mount it on a box or another option is back entry with a Skintop type gland and use H07RN-F cable as it's rated for outdoor use unlike T&E.

The base of the lamp is 89mm dia. I like the idea of being able to fix the lamp to the surface of a conduit end box (lid) as suggested, which has a very suitable cable entry point that I could position facing downwards for weather protection.

I don’t know if conduit end boxes are available in diams just a bit larger than my lamp base? But, assuming they are, what method of fixing should I use to secure the lamp base to the conduit box? I mean, if I attempt to use self tappers it may well just crack the lid. Or, what if I made a lid from 6mm ply? I could screw in to that ? Am I missing something here and making a simple job over complicated-I feel I may be.

Alec, is “square adaptable box” the name these boxes are listed under in the T station cat possibly, or is that just a generic term?? I’d like to look at them and consider the option please.

just use the conduit backbox and screw the fitting direct to that with 2x 4mm screws .no need for the lid as the fitting will cover it

I have found that the conduit back box is 65mm dia. The lamp will cover the back box as you say. The screw holes in the lamp base are outside the dia of the back box.

Use a conduit box lid as a template.
