Don't get me started!!!

The trouble is, the english language doesn't have the right word, so far too often 'Engineer' (or should that be 'engineer') gets banded about!!

I believe that on the continent 'Engineer' holds the same level of meaning as 'Doctor'. i.e you cannot call yourself an engineer without having a degree in engineering. Over here any Tom, Dick or Harry can call themselves an engineer.

The wife has a degree in Mechatronics. However I would personally prefer to call her a housewife. Today in fact I am calling her a painter as she is painting the cove in our house.
I have a couple of 'o' levels. To be honest I am the one doing the plumbing, electrics, welding, gardening, driving etc... not sure what I should be called? Husband?

As well as the degree i thought you had to be a member of the relavent institute and also undertake work to be submited to that institute to prove youre competence.

Seriously though, a few years ago some of the Professional Engineering Institutions tried to get Engineers to use 'Eng' in front of their name in the same manner as Doctors use Dr, but as far as I know it hasn't caught on. I suppose we could get used to it, but somehow it feels a bit pompous to me. I can already use post-nominals if I'm writing something official, or on business cards etc, so I can't decide if the additional title would be necessary or useful.

Post nominals CEng, IEng and EngTech all require membership of one of the Professional Institutions, and registration with the Engineering Council. In order to gain the required level of membership you have to hold recognised qualifications (not necessarily a full degree) and have a stipulated amount of experience in a position of responsibility.

I'm a member of the Institute for Learning witch allows the title MIFL not that i put that. I'm also IOSH and can put TECH IOSH that one i do use.

It to do with teaching in the FE sector you have to register and agree to do 30 hours CPD a year. Last year i did my NEBOSH general certificate 150 Hours! But they wont except that for 5 years worth so go to do my PETTL witch is something to do with teaching.
