No more diesel or petrol cars after 2040 - cloud cuckoo land?

I have just had another thought, if we had a load of straight rivery type channels or that type of thing, we could put the main industry right along side the banks of them and transport the goods by boat and they could even be pulled by horses, no bad gasses except the odd fart----- but---I suppose that would never catch on I dont think .

A lot of Britain's main fibre optic Internet backbones run along old canal towpaths. Straight lines - no traffic and unlikely to be dug up by the gas board!

They also say that by 2020 all diesel driven vehicles could undue heavy road tax,so what if i convert my diesel to veg oil or similar ie palm oil?
Why not rid of the derv and switch to veg oil,oh of course the oil barons would lose money

There is not sufficient land mass to grow food and fuel, that's why.

For once, it's not about money.

And before waste oil is mentioned - there's not enough of that either. A few people that already use it might be swimming in the stuff but it's certainly no large scale solution.


The real issue isn't supply though, it's demand. There are simply too many people (with too many wants) for the planet to support long term. There's a solution to that, but nobody will like it.

I must admit, I will try and keep away from an electric powered car, but the thoughts of all the parking places the laybys, all the street parking, carparks etc all having to have a charging point?

Yes I am one who thinks have overhead cables is a horrible blot on any landscape,

When I think about it someone brings their electric banger into our boat yard, there are 240v boxes (what amps is needed for a car? Our boxes are rated 10amps) nearly all have cables coming out of them going to a boat or two. So you have travelled to your boat but your batteries need charging? where does the supply come from. The boat yard is on the maximum capacity for the supply, which comes down the high street into the yard, we cannot get anymore power sockets because its maxed out, so will the Govt say the Authority must supply points for charging vehicles, if so who will pay the mega cost to bring in more three phase, the yard has Charity status so no money. No doubt this will be thought off, new housing I visit for work, have a couple of points between a lot of houses, so will it be on a rota, all the cars lined up, as one car is fully charged the owner will have to move his/her car so the next can be connected, you could be unlucky and just get to the charging joint and realise you have missed out on charging as you have to go to work now its morning!

What is the towing power of an electric car?

How long after 2040 is it decided that going all electric is not a very good idea and we need to change to something else.

I always remember save for a rainy day, that kicks you in the teeth, if you have scrimped and saved forgone the holidays abroad, now in retirement screws up the benefits you get back. Buts someone who did not save, had all the holidays they wanted, but now can get benefits. Make everyone go for a diesel powered car now look what happening.

Even in towing paths that are being used, not just old!

Not likely to be dug up, but might be stabbed with a mooring pin or two!

Has anyone priced a purely electric vechicle ? They are seriously expensive. I was watching a vid on youtube of an electric motorcycle and the cost was eyewatering. But i suppose if you minus the money you save from fuel, they might work out cheaper.

What is obvious is that there needs to be a change in the attitudes and expectations of society. The right to own your own means of transport is something that will be questioned. The attitudes of a lot of the posters here is that 'things won't work because...' The 'because' is based on the way that you now live your life and the way that you expect it to continue and improve. That is not a sustainable reality. Society (civilisation) will have to accept a degree of back-pedalling if it is to survive. That aside, it's probably already too late.

The only viable solution is back to steam for the working man who needs cheap transport..I persume there going to make all air travel electric too are they,the biggest polluters.....How ironic we,ve come round a full circle back to boiling water i reckon in the future

Nah it'll never work as farts are really bad, too much methane. However if they were lit it'll convert them to Co2 which is better and the horses will probably move faster
