No more diesel or petrol cars after 2040 - cloud cuckoo land?

The infrastructure is going in now and has been for quite a few years. Electricity is already fed around the country, gas is fed around the country, petrol stations everywhere, we already know how to do all this.

This isn't what National grid have been saying, they are on record as saying the National grid is in need of significant investment if it is to meet future needs. If only half of the 25.8 million registered in the Uk (assuming all were switched to electricity) were to be charged simultaneously, would the lights still be on?

The Tesla technology is very good, the Superchargers were free at the beginning(maybe still for a while) and they will do a full recharge in 45mins. I'm sure I read the car even knows if the charge point is avaialble or not.

When I used to run my LPG Rangie I used to plan my stops so I guess it's going to be similar for electric.

Of course we need to generate more electricity and improve the infrastructure, but why do you think that won't or shouldn't (is probably more accurate) happen?

I work for an oil and gas company, I have a vested interest in you all sticking with petrol and diesel, I just can't see it happening. Another 20years will see me out. Maybe I'll need to go into fixing e-bikes. ;-) Electric cars will be the superior option performance wise before too long.

It won't be electric that fully replaces petrol and diesel cars. More likely hydrogen fuel or similar.
Solid fuel coal power stations are getting very much more viable now with carbon capture technology.
No government can plan further than 5 years into the future nd thier comments and promises mean zero if it's not happening right now.
Besides Wtf happens to all those highly toxic and dangerous dead batteries?
Being fair has a UK government even stood by its own manefsto once actually winning an election?

I'm actually a little surprised it's 2040, I thought they may have pushed it to 2030-35.

Really the fact is what we have now is going to be nowhere near the tech that we will have in 2040 let alone in another 5 years. Batteries by then will likely do far more miles than a tank of petrol/diesel.

Every year power generation is increasingly green, so the fossil fuel use gets less of a issue.

I would think by 2040 there will be a lot of driverless haulage.

Over the last month just about every car manufacturer has released info on new main stream ev versions going into production (though unlike Tesla many seem a rehash of ICE car to run EV which lets face it isn't the best way).

I would like to see all EV manufacturers pick up the USA standard for MPG or rather in this case real world mileage from a single charge. So the Tesla models you can readily expect what they say you can get from a single charge. Unfortunately we already have the BMW 3 series EV saying it will do 300 miles when it comes out BUT this is based on the European standard which means in real world it will be lucky to do 200miles.

I'm really not sure how we are going to be able to charge all the cars on say a street with terrace houses. Does this mean we will need a large infrastructure campaign (a bit like when they were putting cables in the road) for a charging point at every house without a drive?

Could be good for the economy and jobs all that needs to be done? Maybe that is a reason for taking this step?

they could invent a system where the freight is hauled between cities with huge long trucks that run on a straight track, you could even have two separate tracks for going and coming, it would only require maybe one driver and can be powered off mains electricity, it even could carry passengers, that would be fantastic idea --------- WHAT COULD WE CALL IT ???----------- but no they will never invent summat like that. it would be far too much hassle getting it to start and stop at the right time.

Ha electric car---------- it is bad enough listening to the missus now, when we have to stop for fuel coz, it wastes too much time and apparently anyway thats a mans job, sorting that sort of stuff. Hum tyres stay inflated and fuel tanks and washer bottles are apparently self filling.

They are starting to replace lines that Beeching shut in the 60s. There's a new line by the side of the A7 to service the many new homes been built along side. I do feel sorry for those that have renovated old stations, and gate houses on the [old] line, only to find they now have a commuter train howling past 20foot away

Funny as your comment is it doesn't cover the main amount of haulage required in this country - supermarkets filled, goods to businesses, home delivery.

Maybe amazon will pay for a small gauge track direct from their local distribution centre to my front door - I think you have solved the haulage problems normspanners

I actually think non driver vehicles doing deliveries is very. Very close. It's only linking sat nav up to the driverless vehicles we already have on trials. Even a chinook can fly itself back to the programed destination and land all on the auto pilot (in conditions human pilots don't know down from up in).

I personally think it is underutilised, or rather road haulage has been pushed in the past when rail could have been utilised better and we find ourselves in a situation now where it is not easy to fix. But there would always be a very large need for road haulage/deliveries. Just look at how we shop now and how businesses are run. Or construction they would always need to get goods and equipment to site.

There's plenty of product that could travel by rail. The thousands of tons of steel, coming into Goole docks trucked to liverpool and Sheffield. Not forgetting the timber. None of this goes to end users. Or the thousands of kitchen units shipped to distribution points through out the country from Howden.

There will always be a to need, to 'break' this down into smaller loads to distribute to shops/endusers etc. But there is no need for the thousands of trucks hauling from a-b on a constant basis

There something that hasn't been mentioned, it came to mind while thinking it's a great opportunity for business in new tech and infrustructure there are going to be 1000's of businesses put out of business on the otherhand.

On cars obviously exhausts will not be needed anymore. Basically the big exhaust manufacturers are doomed.

Did you know that carbon capture doesn't work on an industrial scale? They are still far too expensive. What we need are fusion powered CO2 scrubbers to clean things up!

I have just had another thought, if we had a load of straight rivery type channels or that type of thing, we could put the main industry right along side the banks of them and transport the goods by boat and they could even be pulled by horses, no bad gasses except the odd fart----- but---I suppose that would never catch on I dont think .
