Nitrogen filled tyres

The average tyre fitters/garage compressor is probably rarely blown down (i.e loads of moisture). Nitrogen is going to be a LOT dryer- important on a plane where any moisture could freeze at altitude or for world class motorsport where fractions of a second make a difference but on a daily driver...

As said tyres are going to wear out before they rot, for that matter they'd almost certainly 'go off' before they rot with a lightly used car

I use 100% Co2, have found it seems to give me more downward pressure, and therefore better traction!

The use of nitrogen is required by law in aircraft tyres as the brakes can easily overheat. Something weighing 200 tonnes doing 180 knots suddenly losses a spoiler........ I'll let you do the maths as to how much work the brakes have to do to stop thing before it falls off the end of the runway.

In a brake fire situation having a load of nitrogen dumped in an area that is not only hot but has hydraulic fluid and rubber (by now at melting point) can only be an advantage. Thats the primary reason Nitrogen is used, it damps down any fire. Secondary benefits are its dry (although compressed air for aircraft is dried before it can be used) and it reduces corrosion inside the wheel.

Why on earth its being used on car tyres where the likelyhood of tyres exploding and brake fires is next to nill I don't understand. (F1 use it because of the reduced fire haz as their brakes do get hot enough to cause problems)

Pay for air! who on earth pays for air ? I fill my tyres at Sainsbo's garage for free.

It's 20p for 3 mins at my local garage. But the same machine does dispense up to 5 litres of ready mixed screenwash for £1, which is pretty good value.

Tyres are spelt tyres? Suppose the word tyres could be treated as a singular because it's a single word, but it looks odd. We'd probably need to go to the effort of constructing a whole sentence to be sure.

Which reminds me - has anyone come across the wheel and tyre bible. Someone who knows a bit has put a whole lot of work into that. Here's what he has to say about Nitrogen in tyres. (Essentially what has already been said here, and also the convenience of filling tyres with a compressed gas at a racetrack rather than bringing along a compressor and battery etc.
