One more member here sporting a slightly damaged digit....

Happened on Easter Monday. Was machining a fair size chunk of stainless on the lathe with the four jaw, the swarf was coming off in a continuous spiral rather than chips. All was going well until said spiral got wrapped around my finger at pretty much the same time as another part of the spiral got caught in one of the sticking out jaws of the four jaw chuck pulling the swarf super tight.

The first result was a really deep cut going almost all around my finger. The second result was after the usual lengthy wait, and a lot of poking about, the A & E medic got on to East Grinstead hospital to book me in there, as she reckoned (correctly as it turned out) that some nerves and a tendon had been cut by the the swarf. So two days later, the East Grinstead surgeon used a microscope when he stitched the nerves and tendon back together. As apparently tendons take a while to heal, I am going to have to have a splint on the finger for some time; however, there's lots of stuff that can be done (literally) single handed in the workshop

When I was hanging about in the A & E waiting room I recalled a film that all us apprentices had to watch on our first week at work. It was about workshop safety. It was absolutely gruesome, with what seemed like very realistic depictions of people sawing off their fingers, getting scalped by drilling machines, getting pulled into a lathe etc. It occurred to me that well on the way to 50 years later, it could have come true for me. BTW, when we were watching this film, I was sat by a another apprentice who appeared to be a real hard case; more machismo than you could shake a stick at, crop hair cut, traditional tattoos and so on, during the filmshow I heard a loud thud, said hard case had fainted and fallen off his seat....

Regular industrial Loctite is the worst thing possible for a wound, especially if the wound is dirty. When it develops an infection, there's nowhere for it to go. Look up "sepsis" because if you don't tend to a wound correctly or worse still, attend to it badly, it could cost you a limb.

You have to assess the problem yourself !
A 'flapping' wound , bleeding profusely, glued to stop the bleeding, so you can carry on working.
We are not talking limbs hanging off here !
Usually cut fingers etc,
But you never know !!
Just sayin' -
If you are a wimp, or unable to assess the present situation yourself, leave it alone and go to A&E, the choice is yours

Was a chunk of titanium swarf caught me out once, it tends not to snap, lost a bit of finger end.

The day John posted this up I was looking at a really bad pinch on one of my fingers. I had checked a rifle was clear by opening the bolt and taking a look see but as I have done this eleventy trillion times in the past* I was looking elsewhere when I closed the bolt. I had totally forgotten about the external part of the bolt on the Lee Enfield and trapped a finger between it and the breech, but closed the bolt anyway. Well, more like slammed it shut. As you do. Made my eyes water that did.

Dont forget that when you have damaged a digit you usually whack it with a hammer a week or so later just before it has healed up.
And it throbs rather more second time round!
As for infection, once you have had cellulitis you may be prone to getting it again. If it starts swelling going red & feels hot its doctor time or a&e.
Dont leave it. I once had a week on iv antibiotics after kneeling on a copper boat nail, wasnt much fun espcially as the bloke in the next bed snored for England!. Was only some time later that the doctor told me it had been roughly 50/50 if i lost my leg.

There is no need for personal insults. The use of industrial superglue to dress a wound is one of those internet memes like washing brake disks with WD40.

If such antics are not challenged by presenting the facts, someone is going to get hurt.

Industrial superglue is a Cyanoacrylate glue, Medical superglue is an Aminoacrylate, the latter is designed to work on flesh the ordinary stuff isnt.

Talking of wimps, I'm one of those people who manages to cut myself with a new stanley knife blade occasionally, bleeding isn't too bad, but then manage to faint after cleaning the cut

If I can sneak in among the cat-fighting... a schoolmate's mother worked in a bookbinding place, when books were made properly... in a moment's inattention she ran her hand through a sewing machine (the title of the book is lost to the mists of time). Twenty years later her hands were still like something from a horror film, all healed holes and patched-up flesh gaps.

I had cellulitis 2 years ago, and it flared up during the lockdown. It took too long to get it in front of a dr as Im on immuno suppressants (and also the only Drs left round here while the good ones were busy sorting C19, are a bit useless) and it got infected. I didnt actually get to see a Dr until Feb, and he was a respiratory specialist, got a referral to dermatology and still waiting for that. eventually got to see the nurse at the GPs and got a months worth of antibiotics and still on zinc dressings on both legs. I have pics that make these gammy finger pics look like a graze but I wont post them because its not a competition. But yes, if you can, first sign of a flare up, get to the quacks..

So I am "wrong" because Loctite also produce a medical grade of superglue?

So desperate to make some negative comment you don't even realise you are agreeing with my comment reagarding "industrial" versions of superglue.
