Make sure you back them out to clear the swarf as if you go too deep the tips snap off as they don't have a spiral flute.

Will do. I understand that the taper should be drilled 2/3 of the way.

Yeah I wasn't gonna say...............I did have 4 of them to start with.

And them snapping off can be more problematic and expensive than just the cost of the centre drill. It means you now have some HSS embedded in the part and often it is very tricky to remove and you may have to resort to facing the part down quite a bit before you can get it out.

One other tip is to lock your tailstock barrel up a bit so that it has a bit of friction on it, that will help stop the barrel rotating the slight amount it does when free and will help prevent the centre drill snapping if it grabs the material.

Guys. A question about knurling. Now I understand you get different sizes of knurling tools. Does the diameter of the part have to match the tools cutting capacity. Don't get how it can cut without over cutting the pattern if that makes sense

You will find all sorts of info and people saying that you need a certain dia (or multiples/fractions of a dia ) depending on the amount of teeth on the wheel to get good results. Well all I will say is pressure will give you a good knurl no matter the dia and the wheel just magically skips into the correct track.

As a few have mentioned on this forum the scissor type are probably best for a small lathe as the load is equalised somewhat from either side. The most important thing however is decent quality sharp wheels, some of the cheapo stuff I have seen will smooth out before a piece of steel gets knurled

Was happy with the finish. So re faced the surfaces again. A lot better. Now thinking of get steel tool blanks as get a better finish grinding my own.

I got boxes of old HSS tooling from eBay cheap. When I needed a specific tool i raked through my box of old tooling and found something close then ground to suit my needs. Kept the good stuff separately. Saved a lot of grinding too.

Right.. So far have managed to drill the centre hole. No broken drill bit. Set the centre up in to position. All feels ok and smooth. When the centre locates in position should it just rest inside it's taper with no preasure from the tailstock.

First thing is, you need to use grease or the centre and your workpiece will try and weld themselves together. Just take up the slack with the handwheel on the tailstock until everything is snug.

That looks like a live centre, so no lube and a bit of pressure works best ime. Not preloading the bearings on a live centre and the inherent play leads to chatter.

Dead centre then lube (tallow is great if you have it, grease if not) and just snug.
