I did only just find out that I had a finishing tool in my box of hss tools...**** comes to mind .
Thanks mate. Appreciate that. You may have fluked it, but I'd say if you did it was more of an educated fluke than a complete stab in the dark.
It’s a teeeeeeny weeeeeeeeny ****** ml10.Apologies if I’ve missed it somewhere but what lathe do you have?
I have a mk2 Colchester student and a serious lack of turning talent so am finding it a very steep learning curve. It’s a teeeeeeny weeeeeeeeny ****** ml10.
Edit swear filter must of been updated.![]()
I know mate there are some on here really talented machinists.I have a mk2 Colchester student and a serious lack of turning talent so am finding it a very steep learning curve.
Enjoying this thread.
316 is my favourite too. It’s amazing what a bit of molybdenum can do because I hate turning 304.I love turning alloyed steel almost as much as I do 316. The finish you can achieve is amazing, then again you can sometimes screw it up as well![]()

Watching doubleboosts videos I’ve learnt a lot.Maybe its such a steep learning curve because like most amateurs you dont spend enough time doing it. Like most things it can be learnt with a bit of educated research, practice, help and guidance.
The best thing I found for re learning is to actually make something rather than play about.
Note. I learnt at school, as an apprentice, and have had a lathe at home for nearly 20 years, and still often make a complete pigs ear of things that look like they have been finished with a bread knife.
I’ve never turned 303 and it’s unlikely I would turn it much really as it’s not a very weldable stainless steel. It contains sulphur.Same principle as welding, some grades are good for welding some aren't.
As broached on above, finish quality also has a lot to do with the grade of material you are turning.
Stainless 303 is nicer than 316 which is nicer than 304.
Aluminium - 2*** series machines nicely, as does the 6*** series.
Same for steel.
If you have a look at the link you'll start to get an idea of the differences.

All my aluminium bar stock is 6*** series
It also machines beautifully like you said. I’ll be getting some 2*** stock in soon
Today.. I stripped the headstock for a clean up and make some adjustments. Also got the back gears sorted and working.
It's only in a temporary position. Will get moved when I get a different bracket. Is it possible to swap the motor to the other side? I'm just thinking it will get covered where it is.
