Well so far have set the pulley in the four jaw.
That was some faffing about. Need a bigger 3 jaw to be honest. But everything is tight and central.

I doubt that would sit anywhere near true in a 3 jaw. 4 jaw is the right tool for turning someone that's already true. 3 jaw is for sticking stock in, turning your piece and parting it off.

I could get that true easy enough in my 3jaw with just a bit of thin card on no 2 jaw but for its size id rather hold it in the 4 jaw in stead of only 3 points

OK guys. I done a couple of runs before I started the machine just to make sure everything was correct. Started machine and just done a very small run down the bore. It's ok but I getting a high pitched sketch. Do lathe tools have to bed in...am waiting for my new tools to arrive so have to make do with carbide.

I find my 3 jaw can be accurate but takes a few attempts, some are 0.2mm out! Rotate it a bit and 0.01mm. I dont like it much prefer the 4 jaw.

I get chatter when boring, light finger pressure on the back of the tool will dampen all the noise, probably not a safe idea.... Bigger diameter boring bar?

Yes it's cast. I will gear it down tomorrow and see .

If its cast it could be chilled in places. Also watch the dust machining cast, it can contain particles of sand which can abrade the bed if they get under the saddle

I would have put it in the chuck with the grub screw hole away from the jaws.

Preferably mounted on the faceplate too. Personally, I wouldn't be happy relying on a chuck to hold that, especially not that way round.

I can't turn it around as it's to big for the chuck. Or I get a bigger chuck.

I admit I would sooner have the pulley the other way round. But will just have to take it slow

getting a larger 4 jaw chuck doesn't always work as the external jaws catch the lathe bed if the jobs 2 large

Post us a picture of your tool (James Bond reference omitted). Is it set at centre height?

Most unlikely considering it has already been machined all over. Your point is valid for an unmachined casting.

The way he is holding it is fine. It is the full depth of the step in the jaw. It is balanced and 90% uninterrupted cut (except the very small bit when crossing the grubscrew hole). How exactly would holding it the other way around help matters? Have a go setting it up true on a faceplate and see how long it takes and how (unnecessarily) difficult it is.
