We had a brand new Toyata Rav something or other hybrid as a rental in NZ over Xmas. Reasonable mileage out of it and fine to drive BUT some very strange systems in it. For example you couldn’t enter an address into the nav while you were moving … it had a beep for lane departure that was super sensitive that I couldn’t turn off … if you had the interior lights on and then got out and locked it they stayed on ! A couple folk I spoke to out there said their Toyota’s were the same. I think it’s just the way they are and if you are used to it fine but I’d definitely suggest a decent test drive if you’re not accustomed to that interface. It could of course be buried in the settings … I didn’t have the patience to find out.

It is the new Yaris-hybrid I am only interest in....
I would imagine it to work with the engine running at sweet-spot (rev/loads) and the motor/generator ironing out the high & low power?
It being radical new-tech self-charge...otherwise but like would like 1st ones with braking re-generating? Question "why is it new-tech?"

I don't know enough about the Yaris system to really comment. The Renault system however I think is the bottom diagram...the engine can drive the car and charge the battery . I've observed that the battery is always maintained at minimum 50% charge (either using the engine or via regen braking) and the car always pulls off using the EV mode.
The top left looks like the nissan system where the engine simply powers a generator...I think there's also a ford transit with that system too?

Maybe their old version didn't allow the battery to be charged directly from the engine to support full EV driving...but to me that's more of a tweak.
If the battery size has increased (Vs previous version) then that might give us a clue.
The mpg numbers these days from a petrol are really impressive...ours is a 7 seat estate and does 55mpg...the Yaris I think does even better.

To be fair if you start it in gear it's a hybrid.Here's my 28 year old Toyota Surf ,the change between diesel and electric is seamless and they've done such a good job of integrating the hybrid system I haven't even found it yet

T'other half has one & I drive it sometimes. I really like it. The hybrid tech is pretty much invisible unless you're interested in it. There's a display in the dash where you can watch how its distributing the power which can be interesting. Pretty similar to how I think these things generalyl work, I'd say it was like the series-parallel pic posted above. it doesn't really have much EV-only range to speak about, I think the salesman reckoned a mile or so but what it is very good at is start/stop traffic where the EV part deals with all the little creep forwards in traffic. You can watch it re-gen'ing on overrun or braking and it will kick in the engine whenever it needs it. plant you foot to get onto a roundabout & the electric starts you off & then the engine starts and keeps you accelerating.
No idea what the old one was, I'm afraid but this one does look more modern and the infotainment works well either stand-alone or with Android auto. I suspect the new tech is more likely to be a bunch of small updates to the interior and possibly to the drive power control but likely not something you'd notice unless you were very familiar with the old one.
Its a CVT transmission which I think is a good fit for the car. Overall its not a rocket ship but its nippy enough to be fun and is quite happy at 70+ on a motorway which is not always the case on a small car. Load lugging is not its strong point but its fine for normal day-to-day & shopping trips. If we need big stuff we take the L322 so not bothered by that.
Overall we are both very happy with the purchase.
