Still doesn't explain why's it's new technology.I don't know enough about the Yaris system to really comment. The Renault system however I think is the bottom diagram...the engine can drive the car and charge the battery . I've observed that the battery is always maintained at minimum 50% charge (either using the engine or via regen braking) and the car always pulls off using the EV mode.
The top left looks like the nissan system where the engine simply powers a generator...I think there's also a ford transit with that system too?
Maybe their old version didn't allow the battery to be charged directly from the engine to support full EV driving...but to me that's more of a tweak.Still doesn't explain why's it's new technology.

To be fair if you start it in gear it's a hybrid.Here's my 28 year old Toyota Surf ,the change between diesel and electric is seamless and they've done such a good job of integrating the hybrid system I haven't even found it yet
