Spot on mate, modern cars are too quiet and comfortable to reliably judge speed by sound IMHO.Again I agree in principle but in reality the engine in our car "feels and sounds" the same at 50 as it does at 70!
Due to years of working in noisy environments, tinnitus, multiple operations to repair a damaged ear drum, my hearing is less than great, I can't hear anything above 11Khz, the result... If I'm in a modern car I am unable to judge my speed based on sound because the sound is too quiet.A quick glance at the speedo to verify and I can hold that speed +/- <1mph from the feel/sound of the engine.
If however I'm on my motorbike or driving my Tr7 which has plenty of intake noise I can happily drive "by ear", you can clearly hear the change in tone as you liftoff or apply throttle.
No your not, I spend far more time watching my speedo when in an "average speed area" than during normal driving, as do most people who want to keep points off their license, and it's not about wanting to drive too fast but if you try to drive slower than everybody else it's just plain dangerous. It's a bit like that pedestrian bridge that opened over the Thames where it shook like mad because everybody just got in-sync, you just go with the flow to be safe.Surely I'm not the only one who goes through the 50mph average limits on motorways spending half the time looking ahead and half looking at the speedo because there's no other way of telling how fast I'm going?
Even if they got clobbered with 150% fine they would shrug it off, after all they can afford it.The max fine is still limited to £1000 or £2500 on motorways so those 500k a week footballers in their astons and bentleys can breath easy![]()
If however you are on minimum wage you need every penny just to live nevermind being able to afford anything.
