new speeding fines

As well as the changes to the penalties for using a mobile device, from April the penalties for speeding will increase. 3 bands where the minimum fines will be calculated from your weekly earnings:

Band A = 50% of your weekly earnings

Band B = 100% of your weekly earnings

Band C = 150% of your weekly earnings

How's that going to work with self employed people? Are they going to have to submit their current profit and loss sheets to date for the court to ascertain their earning?

And no more fixed penalty notices, so every offence is going to have to go to court. That's a lot more load on the judiciary.

So I'm assuming that staring at your (uncalibrated) speedo isn't deemed dangerous driving then?

What should the respond to the police be for running over someone on a zebra crossing at 29mph? "It's ok ossifer I know I wasn't speeding as I was watching me speedo"......

Bit like the last transport manager at my place.

A few got brought into the office and had words with due to ` braking to hard `

I think we can all agree in principle but the reality of stumping up half a weeks wages for doing 35 in a 30 it's going to sting a little! Sounds very profitable too. I thought speed cameras were in demise due to them being so expensive they no longer contribute to police coffers, bet we'll see a lot more now. And probably even less officers, unless of course they're manning a mobile speed trap in a layby after a bend on a dual carriageway where there hasn't been an accident in the last 22 years!

There's always the 'defence' about having to watch your speedo instead of the road.

Ballcocks.

A quick glance at the speedo to verify and I can hold that speed +/- <1mph from the feel/sound of the engine.

And yes, a glance is all it takes - are people these days so incapable of estimating their own speed?

If you're so detached from the experience of actually driving a vehicle because you feel something else is more important than being in control then maybe it's time to reconsider taking advantage of the privilege of holding a driving licence.

If it was my kid you hit while poncing some crap about having to watch your speedo the minimum fine level would be the least of your worries.

Again I agree in principle but in reality the engine in our car "feels and sounds" the same at 50 as it does at 70! Surely I'm not the only one who goes through the 50mph average limits on motorways spending half the time looking ahead and half looking at the speedo because there's no other way of telling how fast I'm going?

If speed limits were set for sound reason I would be agreeing with you 100%. Unfortunately, they are set for political and revenue reasons by and large. Speed limits decrease when the income from speeding fines reduces, to keep the flow going. If everyone drove at 19MPH, the speed limit would be set at 15MPH.
