these pressed galvanised steel building seem to be getting popular but depends if you’d get away with box profile roof sheets in your area.

No it is going down the end in front of the current workshop where the lathe lives.

Whatever you do spend extra and get the insulated sheets.

I ave a rainforest every morning in the workshop

the stables is like that in the mornings too! I may use OSB on the roof first the the non insulated sheets as I have already got the insulation for the whole build

If it's any help I had a preexisting but badly formed concrete base , so made a 4x2 frame on 12 ins centres , fitted 50 mm insulation under an 18mm floor , 3x2 frame for walls 4x2 joists 18mm ceiling with 3x2 cross beams on top with 50 mm insulation , tyvek then steel box profile roofing , 4 x solar panel powered computer fans for vents , interior lined with 12mm ply , then decorated with left over paint, dry warm and quiet, good for Egyptian PT ,

Does it have to be 150mm? I have some sheets of 50mm polystyrene here

Anything is better than nothing is a given but the heat losses are higher the less you have obviously.

I'm having someone run the numbers on 50mm vs 150mm. As an indication I know a guy (was one of the Scrapheap Challenge experts) who has built his house to "Passive" standards for insulation, heat loss & heat recovery. His place has a 100mm concrete slab on 300mm of polystyrene. 8% of his total heat loss is through the floor even with that amount of insulation.

I know its "only a shed" but imo it's worth doing well as you'll get so much more out of it. Plan for the future too. Kid's annexe later on, granny flat, row with the missus etc.

Air tightness too is a big plus.

My house has 100mm of king span in the floors, porch only 70, not passive, but far far better than my shed, with just concrete.

They say you only pay for insulation once. I dug down in my bathroom and put:

- 2" Type 2
- Sand blind
- 25mm eps
- DPM
- 150mm Celotex
- Polypipe panels with 16mm UFH pipes
- 100mm wet concrete levelled with screed rails
- Tiles

UFH isn't connected up yet but when you have a shower in the wet room corner the floor stays warm for ages.

If my planned garden room cum shed happens I'll do a similar floor build up.

thats an eye opener , never would have thought they would be that flammable ?? what did it have in it previously ? thinners/petrol just wouldnt have given that a thought as potential fire hazard with sparks

It had numerous small off cuts of Delrin , I suspect the sparks dropped down the gaps and obviously were enough heat to produce flammable fumes which I suspect was a very small low flame . I hadn't done any welding or grinding for the last half hr of work and gave things a quick once over before I left ensuring the gas bottles were off and nothing was burning .

I didn't notice the bucket on fire .. I came in the house to wash up for teatime . Looked out the window to see if I'd closed the roller door on the garage and saw two foot high flames under the welding bench next to both gas cylinders . That's the fastest I've ever gone on crutches for 20 yards , I got the hose pipe on the bucket & extinguished the flames PDQ. What surprised me initially is that the orange plastic bucket had virtually disappeared whilst the Delrin had barely bubbled up .

The fumes given off by the fire & the evaporating water have turned almost every bit of unpainted steel in the garage rusty .

You can use DPM between slab and timber . You do what you thinks best I opted for timber raised of the deck for less contact with water.

I wish I had laid 2 layer of brickwork on the reinforced slab that I constructed our log cabin office on & used a DPC on top of the bricks . 11 years on the super treated guaranteed 10 anti rot treatment has died the bearers have started to show sign of wet rot on the outer bearers .
As a temp solution I've given the timbers five anti rot treatments last year I'm not looking forward to jacking each side up in turn and angle grinding the bearers off then replacing them with some engineered plastic spars .

I raised an old freebie shed on blocks/bricks. Shouldn't have bothered. Ended up with a tiny shed for a lot of work. Should have chopped it up, sold it as firewood by the gate and put the money towards a shed 4 times the size:

On a very serious note...

Those with youngsters or planning to. Build a big, warm shed. Use for all sorts of projects in whatever the weather with them. You will literally make memories in there. Even, for the cost involved, consider putting 150mm of insulation under the slab and underfloor heating pipes for the future.

I kick myself every day that I'm still working in the open or ramshackle draughty old stable that should really be torn down and rebuilt. Just don't feel like going in there when it's cold and damp.

I used to be like you , so 10 yrs ago I insulated the floor , roof & all walls are stuffed with insulation on the log cabin , hung 1.5 mm sheets if industrial engineering DPC on the walls before putting on the batons for insulation & plaster board .

Had a second skin with a 75 mm air gap built in the garage five years ago and at the same time put on a 100 mm insulated steel roof to replace the leaky wriggly tin one .

Now , the garage is heated with two 7 watt CLF bulbs in baton holders on a slab of wood & the same in the log cabin . Never seen the temp drop below 9 oC in any of them once the doors are closed up even when it was minus 8 outside . Which is brill for the washing machine is plumbed in out in the garage .

No, I used the plastic sticky lead flashing on the top of the bearers instead .. didn't dream that there would be standing water on the edge of the floor slab .

Really glad you caught it , and opened my eyes to something I wouldnt have thought off. Shame about the rust but think that could have been way way worse eh.

On my shed the sides over hang the slab and the roof overhangs all round ,the mono pitch also has a gutter and downpipe leading the water away , hopefully keeping the 2ater off the slab and preventing rain bounce soaking the lower boards ,

Frame couple inches overhang tyvek batten then cladding, with wood dry is good wet is bad , guttering is also important , overhang of the roof should be as large as practical all round , on the uk workshop a woodworking forum there was a sticky post regarding shed build , a concrete slab is probably req if you have heavy machines or massive lumps to store anything 2 blokes could lift would be fine on a 12 inch centre 4 or 6x2 frame with 18mm ply on , this could be on block piers , put dpc on these, these are just my thoughts and limited experience , hth , don't fancy your intention of humping tons of concrete gear through house, we met when you bought my welders, I now live in a tiny hamlet in the county of my birth , Cornwall
