The tension adjusting knob should have a spring inside to keep the pressure on. The knob is in 2 parts & one part slides inside the other to keep it constant, if yours doesn't or is stuck, I would say that's your problem, if the roller is running slightly out of true, the spring should take it up. An easy fix if that's it.
Looks like it’s missing the washer that holds the spring from going through the fitting, it’s the spring that puts the pressure on, not the screw, the screw is only to increase or decrease the pressure, that way it gets an even pressure even if the roller isn’t round.
Edit, they all now seem to be like yours, cheap and nasty and much worse than Clarke’s of old, so I don’t think you can improve on it, or that the spring does anything.
The only thing I can think of is to see how well the two rollers together fit the wire over the full range of wobble, then if you find it not gripping enough have someone skim a fraction off the roller with the notch in it for the wire, or convert the drive to the spring operated, which would need a longer threaded rod and a decent duty spring and a couple of washers.

I will agree on that one I had a Clark for many years but it has moved to pastures newc

Don't grind it !!! Or it will end up like this with an uneven depth or groove. If, once you have tried your "new" roller and as I suspect it will, find it's still running out then you will need to remove it and VERY carefully tweek the motor shaft. this would be best done with a short length of tube that is a close fit over the shaft and in very small amounts, pushed to true up. BUT you would need to mark the shaft first to know which way to tweek it.

Slim Jim, mine looks exactly the same as that, the tensioning spring is inside the adjusting nut, as I said the nut is in two parts with a spring inside. The spring that's on view is not the tensioning spring, I think it's only there to keep the two parts of the nut together while the tension is off. Sort out the spring tension & I think all will be ok.
The spring assembly should be able to sort out any out of true running if it's working ok.
Edit, one other thing to check, is something stopping the top tensioning part trapping the wire, is it jamming on its swivel? This could stop it putting pressure on the wire.

ok thanks for all the updates and help got home and had a few hours to play
1st and prob the most inportant the spring in between the screw was missing i found it at the back of the wire compartment belive it or not made a note differance but not fix
bit ashamed here but had said on the fourm i had changed the liner i had not
the liner was clean but changed it any way not easy not hard but had to take apart a good part of the case it was a metal liner i think the unit has done more work than it looks like
the lever that holds the wire in it place was very stiff so removed clean and grease helped not top notch but way better
and new roller turned up to day cheaking against the old one the old one was not that bad but defo a bit worn so installed that and tryed it out

and yes the roller it still out a bit the slack takes it up quite some not the best but useable
one day will get round to replacing the roller unit and do a euro upgrade on the torch and win the lottery move to a bigger place buy meny expenive cars or pigs fly cars drive them selves and im a good welder
