What about a wire with a weight on a pulley looped through it, that runs up and down inside the column?

I thought about that but the power cables run down the centre so there wouldn't be enough room. I ended up using that principal though but having the weight on the gib. Just need to make the weight now. The pliers are were the weight will go and there is a pin to hook the wires on to.

Starting the paint today. The consensus is now red. We've been tactically asking him for the last couple of days " if you had a crane, what colour would it be? "
So now red it is as there is no time left to change. And the bonus is I'll save some cash as I already have some 2k red from a car repair.

I think you have overlooked something major.

That is a proper crane. The training courses your son needs will take him weeks. You need Health and Safety approval to operate it and I hope he has a crane operator's vest and helmet!
