just make sure as he gets older its not sold off to fund a new something else..I had a tin crane as a kid,triang I think, loved that thing always recovering wrecked cars etc, great toys for boys.
It's cool to see something like this. So much time and effort looks amazing and will be very rewarding for you . Not another kid on the planet will have one until someone says they'll give you £1K to make them one 
Last year we started doing a thing we saw on Alaska Last Frontier, it's a Secret Santa but you can only use something/materials you already have.

Done the finishing touches to the hook block tonight. I didn't have any 4 mm rod only 8mm in stock. I started to machine some down in the lathe but it's a real pain turning small diameter stock as it flexes if you take too deep a cut without a steady.
So rather than re inventing the wheel I looked for a suitable alternative , a 4 inch nail!
So with a bit of tidying up and some persuasion I have a nice hook......
It's looking like a proper crane now. I now need to keep it covered from little eyes venturing into the workshop!

Thanks. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now and I might actually finish it this year. Ive got 2 days leave to take before 1st of Jan so fingers crossed.
I'd like to make a grabber for it but that may have to be a later addition along with an electro magnet.

Been in the garage every night this week. I'm now on with the canopy. I decided on aluminium so to reduce the weight so not as top heavy. plus it gives me a bit more practice welding. I also enjoy working with alI as it's easy to cut and bend.
This was the second go as after spending two hours on the first one cutting etc i folded it upside-down

And this is where we are now. I've decided to drop the "Cranky" theme now as like most kids the toy of the moment changes and he is not as interested in Thomas anymore. He still loves cranes tho thankfully. This was evident when he got really excited when he saw an Elmsley crane on a building site near our house.
We did a bit of probing and asked if he had a crane then what colour would it be,"yellow Daddy"!
So yellow it's going to be. I'm also going make it look a bit less boxy, probably will make a little cabin.
Also toying with having a sign on each side?

are you planning on folding the edges and fitting wheels underneath so he can move it around
