A body engineer from Land Rover goes on an exchange visit to Toyota in Japan and watches the engineers developing the latest Land Cruiser bodyshell. He notices that on the workbench they have a cat in a small cage and he asks what it's for. The Japanese engineer tells him when they have finished a Land Cruiser they lock a cat in it and go home. If the cat is dead when they return in the morning they know the shutlines on the doors are up to their high standards. The LR guy likes this idea and when he gets back to Solihull he takes a cat to work and locks it in a Defender and goes home for the night. When he returns in the morning the cat is gone.

Can't go wrong with a 300, they run cool anyways, in fact my disco has been running without a fan for 3 years now and it never gets any warmer than half way. I would suggest you replace the P gasket behind the water pump as they are prone to leaking, failing and cooking the engine, ask me how I know............ Probably the simplest engine to do a cam belt on, 2 hours max! Don't forget to give the fuel pump a tweak oh and a tdi on a VE pump is 111bhp, the edc version runs 122

Vgt? I've been tossing up with tweaking mine a hit more and fitting a larger turbo, but now I've decided to build a 100" defender pickup on a disco chassis I've been given. Just require a bulkhead, a set of wings and a truck cab now if anyone knows of a set. It's going to be a workhorse so I don't mind tatty and I don't mind building a bulkhead up that's gone a bit crispy. Also toying it's the idea of a cummins 6bt....

I had thought about leaving the disco body on with a 6bt but they just rot to hell, at least with a defender body you can actually get to bits

I'm living with a disco atm and don't get me wrong I love it, but it's just such a ballache doing anything on it at all, like the clutch, on a defender an hours job, disco it's a full day as you have to take the box fully ou

Saw a rather neglected looking series 1 today, headlights in the middle and split windscreen but no front plate so couldn't say exact year

The temptation to knock was high, but it looked like step toes yard so I moved on

Watching that show on the travel channel "shed and buried" with henry cole and sam lovegrove. Cole i can take or leave, but lovegrove knows his stuff. They were in a shed in one of the latest shows and they found a series one landrover in really rough nick, lovegrove popped the bonnet and was amazed, the landy had a rolls royce engine in it. One of a run of RR engined landys built by the factory.

Unfortunate that most people think their old series 1 are potentially worth 45K and are either leaving them to rot in sheds or asking very high prices.

One local to me has had a quick blow over in bronze green and owner reckons it's now an 11K motor.

To think we used to chop up rrc's and 80' s to trial... thats about the only thing in my life I regret doing :-(

Hi, The RR Land Rovers were built to proof test the engines which were a new development, a lot of the Land Rovers suffered greatly doing this because the engine was a heavy old lump.
