New Landy

Right o chaps before I go and buy this item, a question , the landy has a 300 tdi fitted , it is a series 2 , it has a standard radiator is this man enough for a 300tdi, the rest of the car looks good , overdrive , galv chassis 2 sets of wheels 90 diffs fitted originals included, paint work seats etc ok, the engine comp is tight and has the original oil bath filter, should this be changed for a cartridge type, Cheers in advance

300 tdis normally have an oil cooler built into the rad

Hi, If it's got a heavy duty 4 row core then it should be OK, I'm running a V8 behind one. The power of the V8 is more than the TDi, 160 vs 122. Personally I'm not keen on in-rad oil coolers because in the event of failure they end up mixing.

Has it got the original engine driven fan? The diesels run cold anyway, it will be fine. If it's an old rad it could be a bit blocked so if you have problems, a new rad will be beneficial.

Hi I haven't seen the car yet , looking on Saturday, pics don't show fan but will assume it is fitted,the ,top of the rad looks like it is in newish condition, no flaky paint etc,didn't know about oil cooler, the intercooler is mounted at a slight angle on the left side of the rad panel,is the oil cooler in that?

Radiator will be plenty big enough in this country.

Nothing to do with engine power, but if it has the turbo I would make sure it has an oil cooler.

I'd have a look how the conversion has been plumbed.

Its easy enough to fit a small cooler if there isn't one.

Picture one clearly shows an electric fan in front of the rad, in fairness it looks like a well implemented conversion and makes a change not to take the lazy way out and not fit the turbo.

Flux insure mine and its quite modified, agreed value etc and they are fairly good.

I'd be more concerned about the gearbox than a cooler, assuming it's the series gearbox still; the torque of the tdi can finish off a tired one quite quickly. Most people get around that by removing the blower. An oil cooler is really only needed for prolonged towing at low speeds or in very hot temps; the UK rarely gets hot enough to trouble these things.

My old one is now in north carolina,probably worth 20 grand now, had lt85 gbox high ratio txfr box with helical gears , electrically operated dash flaps air con ,was part of the press fleet for the discovery launch,

Can't go wrong with a 300, they run cool anyways, in fact my disco has been running without a fan for 3 years now and it never gets any warmer than half way. I would suggest you replace the P gasket behind the water pump as they are prone to leaking, failing and cooking the engine, ask me how I know............ Probably the simplest engine to do a cam belt on, 2 hours max! Don't forget to give the fuel pump a tweak oh and a tdi on a VE pump is 111bhp, the edc version runs 122

If its got 90 axel components, and a new chassis, its not been coil sprung, has it?

If it has, you can never (legally) claim tax exemption on it. And, if it has, then you kind of may as well just get a later landrover anyhow!

No still leaf sprung, original axles like for like replacement chassis ,original s2 gearbox, original body so tax exempt with long mot history on line , will check out paperwork on viewing, still not sure if it has an oil cooler

Hi, You lose 2 points for the change of suspension (leaf to coil), debatable 2 points for change of axles (same type but not like for like). Mostly loss of the 5 points for the chassis if they have radically changed it by cutting anything off but OK if they have only added to it. The loss of the chassis points is the end of the registration and a IVA is needed.

This will be my third tax exempt landy but the first with an engine that is a modern engine albeit a landrover transplant, I believe the engine is worth 1 point from a possible 14, the same chassis unmodified is 5 points axles 2 transmission 2 suspension 2 steering 2, minimum required to retain tax exemption is 8, whether or not the differential ratio affects it is a moot point and unlikely to be detectable in normal checks, even then still have enough points, the only file in the ointment at the mo is the filler cap behind drivers door is blanked off so suspect underseat filler, a bargaining point I think , unless there is a nonstandard tank on the passenger side ,

I had underseat tanks on my Lightweight, you just get funny looks when putting the pump hose through the drivers door at petrol stations
