New Jockey wheel

Hi,

the hovercraft trailer that I made a few weeks ago needed a jockey wheel, and I found a bit of pipe kicking around the workshop...

So I cut out some side pieces to hold one of the spare wheels that I have laying around.



then I welded a couple of strips of 5mm plate onto the end of the tube to widen the gap enough to take a wheel, and welded on the wheel-legs at a bit of an angle so it worked like a caster.



After cutting the end off, I got a couple of thick washers and joined them together with a nut and bolt. This was left loose enough for the washers to turn freely without being slack and I put a couple of spots of weld on the threads. One washer was then welded onto each piece of pipe



After a coat of black Hamerite and a week in the airing cupboard to dry off while waiting for the rain to stop...

I finally got the clamp welded on yesterday morning...

thanks for that wozza was once going to build one meself had a twin 250cc robin engine with propeller on my mycrolite was gonna use that but sold it instead. nice machine peter

Hi,

thanks...it'd be great if I could get the engine to run reliably. I've been kicking around ideas for a 4-stroke but they tend to be big and heavy, hence expensive.

There are plenty of cheap 2-stroke bikes around so that's what I'll be looking at next. maybe by next spring... :-)

It's fun to make your own bits for jobs but when I needed one for our trailer tent last year I got a wind up one for £12 from a local trailer parts shop with clamp included. The clamp bolted to a plate on the draw bar so no welding was involved but I will find an excuse to weld something to it next time. Time to look for a front box I think.

i got my jockey wheel free me m8 in ici used to borrow em off hire compressors and put sum scaffolding pole in there place

Hi,

the only ones I could find locally, car-boots, etc, were £20 or so.

But this isn't just a bout the money, it's 'making' it that's important. If I'd had to buy the wheel then it might have pushed the price up, but I had all of the gear in my scrap boxes.
