Small engines that have sat idle for a while usually need the carbs replaced.
Emergency equipment on fire trucks and such need the fuel dumped out and replace every few months.
Fuel additives don't seem to help.

why is it always us commoners who suffer.

Vehicles in pretty constant use are mostly alright ,the substance starts to decay as soon as it is manufactured.

Yeah it's possible to split it out,

I think it was in an old top gear mag where it was asking the reader what the best use was for the worlds last tank of petrol. some options included driving a Bugatti Veyron for 5 mins at full pelt or using it sporadically to make it last as long as possible.

Ultimately the answer was to drink it as it's not worth living in a world without petrol

They started with E10 over here and then went to E15, each step is multiples worse than the one before.
Higher cost and less fuel economy.

I feel sure that, if you were to get absolutely standard "B-zero" petrol, and brand it as "Eco", a good number of people would purport to have issues....

Heard about this situation the other day. Did a bit of research and took a punt on this for use with my vintage motorbike. Weather it helps or not ?
An excelent product I've used over the years (overseas) to boost fuel efficiency, engine response, and horsepower since unleaded petrol became the norm, was " Marvel Mystery Oil "; good stuff.

I work on small engines, I never used to have to replace carburetors.
The E15 makes the aluminum get white and dusty with pockmark holes, and the brass parts turn green.
Some people recommend adding water to the fuel and draining the resultant water alcohol mixture off of the bottom.
