New caravan tyres

We have a twin axle Swift caravan, 10 years old so due for another set of tyres based on age, (I tend to change them at the recommended 5 year interval for safety). Size is 175/65/14 86T. Last time I bought Hankook vantra tyres at £48 each. Now the same tyre is £86 each. I've seen an alternative Kumho tyre with the same load index at £49 each. Any reason the Kumho tyre won't do just as well? I have used both brands of tyres before on cars and they seemed similar in grip and wear characteristics. I know there are cheaper strangely named Chinese brands out there but I tend to avoid those and go for a well known mid range brand. Thoughts?

Good for you, changing the tyres at a time interval.
As for the tyre choice the caravan is yours and only you now it’s characteristics when towing, potholes and general poor road surfaces will destroy tyres whatever the brand. Fit what you are comfortable with. Assuming that the tyres are the correct load and speed rate for the caravan and that your insurer is happy .

No reason at all, if all the specs match then they should be fine.
Kumho might not be a top tier brand but they've been around for many years.

Do Black circles not do them, bought 4 Goodyear Eagle NCT’s off them for the price I would have paid for three same spec from a local tyre dealer. Buy 3 get one free. RonA

You might ask to have all the wheels balanced as well .. , most tyre places laugh at such a request from an old HND motor vehicle engineer but having a bust spine and other injuries I can tell you it makes for a lot less vibrations reaching your spine and also gives a better MPG .

Do you ever come over the water down to South Wales ? If so Harris of Swansea are one of the best places I've ever used , both for price & service . If on checking you find the prices great and you're heading here .. picking a full set up could be a viable option .

Not sure if Black Circles ship/operate in Northern Ireland but if you have a friend who can fit them then they list a few of them from £35. They do fit them too but that adds around £10-15 a tyre.

I use Black Circles because the service is good, next day delivery when many online tyre places don't actually have them and order them in to ship next day. I've got a tyre machine though so that saves me loads.

Sadly lack of use and UV exposure doesn't help these kind of tyres. When I got my Ifor second hand I fitted 4 new tyres, a few years later they had massive amount of tread but the sidewall were all cracked. I ended up fitting a couple of the ones I took off and put in the shed because they were in better condition until a new set arrived.

for that reason, and anti-theft, wheels come of my car transport trailer and get stored in the shed. Its got a folding drawbar that acts as a stand, so it sits on that and the rear stabilisers.

Also good enough for the Bowler Nemesis in the Dakar rally so they aren't horrendous.

Narberth tyres normally beat everyone on price if they can source the tyres. Closer to Ireland as well

I'll be in lovely Wales in August but will have new tyres prior to the journey. I do have caravan tyres balanced, agree that it's important. Think I will go for the Kumhos. Cheers all! The barely worn but 5 year old tyres coming off will be recycled onto my trailer.

I did that when I also had both a caravan & trailer I put an innertube and a can of puncture seal in each wheel as I used my trailer for placing bee hives & collecting honey , most places the hives were site were full of puncturing bits & thorns .

Never found an innertube much help with punctures - I compete in trialling, so tyres sort of end up consumable. If something goes through the tyre - it goes through the tube too. Plus when the tyre moves on the rim at low pressure, it drags the tube and pulls the valve out . . .grr!

When I did trials, I used to glue the tyres on the rims to stop them moving, regularly used to run at 5psi & never moved.

I have actually gone for these in the end, a van tyre with 90 load index for £55 each.

Took my caravan wheels off this morning, the tyres coming off look like new still. They will have plenty of life left in them for trailer use.

Dropped both the caravan alloy wheels and the steel trailer wheels at tyre fitters yesterday. Asked them to balance the caravan wheels but not to bother with the trailer wheels. Came back later and collected them all. Only when I got home did I notice the old balance weights still on the 'van wheels. Took them back this morning and had them done! Think they were surprised at the request but as you rightly say a balanced wheel has got to be better no matter what it's on.

If low miles and you jack it up off season and cover to keep sun off surely you can get more than five years ourt of a set?

Recommended interval is 5 years, maximum 7 years. Seen too many destroyed caravans caused by a sudden tyre failure. For the sake of £200 ish every 5 years its peace of mind. I've happily re used the take off tyres to fit my new build trailer. A puncture on it wouldn't be the end of the word though tbh the old tyres still look perfect.

Nothing wrong with these - I sell loads of them and don't have a problem (any warranty claims at all).
