I had a look for the new rates after seeing a "clickbait" ad about them doubling, same as you, couldn't find anythingSame thing, I can find the current rate but not the new ones. Anyone smell a rat here?

I gave up trying to find any logic to the Road Fund Licence rates long ago.
I downsized to a piddly little 2 litre back in 2019 and got hit with the top rate tax because of list price not CO2 emissions. I've been paying over £500 ever since, but it was supposed to reduce to 'standard rate' after 5 years. Which it hasn't of course.

Mine is still extortionate but I'll be keeping it until it dies.
There will be a lot of people who are driving high emission cars registered before March 2006 who were paying a lower rate tax suddenly finding themselves paying double from April.

Simple answer is NO.
I am in the motortrade as well - it just so confusing.
I just do short of HPi checks now - to find tax rates - some vehicles look too cheap for what they are - others look too much money for the size of the engine.
Conclude: Like everything else you buy - they just made it so complicated - in an attempt - to charge the greater percentage of buyers more!

And the over 40 grand tax regardlessfrom what i can gather, it is the tax you pay when a new car is first registered on top of your road tax, that will now include those new fangled electric things.

The VED situation seems crazy to me, I’ve a Skoda Roomster, does 50+ to the gallon everywhere, costs I think it’s £150, my mate had a VW Passat, did about 45 to the gallon. Paid £30. No my understanding is co2 emissions are directly related to the amount of fuel burnt, so how does that work. My friend has bought a Skoda equivalent to the Passat now, that also is so low on tax to be laughable.

My Shogun is registered as a van which I believe is cheaper than the car variant. It's a 3.6l diesel and does around 30mpg. It doesn't make any sense to me

It's a specific test set carried out on each car.
Diesel cars with stop start technology are doing the same euro emissions test but if you imagine for large parts of it the engine isn't running at all with the stop start.
It's a cheat basically.
So my 2017 Mercedes C220d is only £25 tax a year because it has stop start and scored very low.

I’ve just sold my old trusty BMW X5, 3.0D, tax was over £700 per year, only did about 1400 miles last year so I thought 50p per mile on road tax was just silly, shame as it was a great old car and would have gone on for many more reliable years.
No idea how much it would have gone up with this new bend over and drop pants latest Labour rip off everyone levy.
