I've just spent the morning building a roof for sis's "summer house" (20ftx14ft [1] shed built from pallets+scaff boards).

I've done more trigonometry today than I have since my A-levels.


And there was more maths in the lvl 3 lecktrickery course than in the degree-level accounting course I did

[1] yes, she built the shed 1ft wider than the longest scaffolding boards, just to make it *fun*

And this is probably a good example that's more than just cost cutting, lots of people think construction work is easy and only for thicko's, something that schools seem to be encouraging as everyone these days must be in IT, media, computer game designers etc.
And these people are teaching our kids?!!!

I know quite a few "trades people" and the successful ones are not thick, by the wildest stretch of the imagination.

Last term, an evening was set aside to Meet the Employers, one lad went along who has a small roofing business, out of the 200 or so leavers, how many do you think stopped to enquire at his little stand?


None.

They are all going to be "Social Influencers" youtube stars or win the lottery. If they had been paying attention in Maths Class they would have already worked out their chances.

Academic staff also inhabit a different reality to the rest of us mere mortals, everything will be left until the last minute, with no forward planning and then completely changed on a whim. It is just the way they operate.
Everything has to be done on a shoestring and the idea that anybody needs to make a profit is completly alien.

Sounds like nearly every automotive and defence aerospace project we worked on in a previous life! "Shoestring" being relative of course - massive budgets, but it all seemed to disappear elsewhere.

I would have walked past too . . . don't like heights . . . or rather, the solid ground at the bottom of them.

I wanted to be an engineer from a very early age anyway - plastic meccano at primary school age (actually, just remembering that - 1976/7 when I was 6 - building a massive plastic meccano windmill with a mate at school in Kinson, Dorset. Then being allowed to go into older kids class room to make wooden ones - using tenon saw, hammer, nails etc at age 6, unsupervised from what I remember. And that was the last practical woodwork (or metalwork, if we include the use of metal nails) I did until going to University in 1988/9, having moved to Yorkshire in early 1978).

I have still ended up a long way off the ground on some of the engineering projects in various locations around the world - and while I got more used to the heights, I still didn't like them!

After reading about the UK Womens new no1 in Tennis, and her earnings so far at the US Open, I'm beginning to think I should have had my mums old racquet from her school days in the 40's restrung with new cat-gut when I was "using" it at school in the early 1980's . . .
